The world of business is constantly changing and evolving. If we are honest, it was not that long ago that women were only allowed to be secretaries for corporations and businesses. According to recent data, women started more than 1,800 new businesses of their own every day last year. Combining real-world knowledge and skills with what is learned in the classroom is essential to excelling in business. The schools on our best business schools for women list all include female faculty and staff who understand the unique balance that it takes to be a successful part of the business industry as a woman. Entering into the field of business can seem very overwhelming. Still, high-quality programs with support and understanding of what it is like to be a woman in a male-dominated field can make all the difference.

Before you choose a program, you may have a few questions. Lucky for you, we can help!

Are women less likely to get hired for business jobs?

According to LinkedIn, the opposite is actually true. Women are 20% less likely to apply for positions that they are qualified for. In their research, LinkedIn found that women felt that they needed to meet 100% of job qualifications in order to apply, while men only felt the need to meet 60% before applying. With that being said, women are 16% more likely to get hired after applying for a job and an impressive 18% more likely to get hired for senior positions. The key point here is that women who are qualified are hired for more positions than men-if they take the first step in applying.

Are women paid the same as men in business positions?

According to recent Census Bureau data, women of all races earned, on average, 82 cents for every $1 earned by men of all races. While this is a discouraging statistic, these numbers compared all occupations. The data also reflects that women are often more likely to hold caretaker roles, which often have a lower standard of pay. For business specifically, another study conducted by the Forte’ Foundation showed that an MBA provided “an economic mobility engine for women,” which increased their annual salaries by 63% or more. Unfortunately, in many circumstances, this data showed that this is often still less than men both pre- and post-MBA.

Are there resources to help businesswomen specifically?

Scholarshipsforwomen.net offers connections to numerous scholarships and grants for women who are entering into the field of business. The financial resources on this page vary in amounts and serve women of many different specifications, such as those with hearing loss, those who live in certain states, those who meet certain academic standards, those who are from certain ethnic backgrounds, and more.

The Forte’ Foundation is a non-profit that works with women, universities, and corporations to support women as they rise up within their careers and communities. More than 6,000 women attended career prep programs annually hosted by the Foundation. The Forte’ Fellowship has awarded more than $226 million to support female MBA students. Through this truly unique support system, undergraduate students are taught career readiness skills, graduate students are financially supported in their dreams to obtain an MBA, women in business leadership roles receive support and training, and donors and partners have an opportunity to support and continue the cycle of success for women in business.

Do I have to have to have an undergraduate degree in business to earn my MBA or graduate degree in business?

The answer to this is generally school-specific. Some advanced business programs welcome a variety of educational and career backgrounds, while others prefer those who are well versed in the business industry. However, many of the programs with business background requirements do offer an option to take several prerequisite courses to build foundation skills before fully entering into their MBA program. Foundational MBA courses often cover key topics such as Marketing Management, Managerial Accounting, and Organizational Theory.

I am planning on attending classes on campus. How can I tell if a university is safe?

A few of the ways that you can find out if a campus is safe are by checking out the school’s safety statistics (they are required to have them posted). When speaking with guidance counselors, be honest and ask about safety concerns, including how active campus police are and when they patrol. Visiting the school campus in person is also an essential way to tell if the school is right for you. Remember to go with your gut instinct about whether or not you feel safe.

Many of the schools on this list have online programs. Are online programs as reputable as on-campus degrees?

In general online degrees from accredited business schools carry the same level of prestige as on-campus options. Many times there are hybrid options available as well, which offer the benefits of on-campus learning with the flexibility of turning in additional coursework on your own schedule. At many schools, the professors who teach on-campus classes also teach the online courses. Some even have real-time live videos that allow students to watch live lectures from wherever they are. Overall earning a degree that is accredited is key. The best delivery method is the one that works for your schedule and lifestyle.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the median annual wage for business and financial occupations was $69,820 in May of 2019, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations at only $39,810. Women who are looking to gain skills that are adaptable, relevant, and applicable to a variety of industries should definitely consider earning their undergraduate degree in business. There are an array of possible majors associated with business degrees such as entrepreneurship, international business, marketing, sport management, tourism & hospitality management, human resources, and more. As we discussed before, taking learning to the next level with an MBA not only prepares businesswomen for success through academics, it also gives them the real-world skills needed for significant pay increases. Earning a business degree is a smart choice with many avenues towards success.
