They keep all records straight and transparent, while an ill-prepared accountant can cause a disaster for an organization. There are many pitfalls in accounting that can lead to disorganized and lost financial records, waste and inefficiency within a company, and poor record-keeping can even lead to hefty fines and jail time.

What is the difference between a BS in Accounting and a BA in Accounting?

At first glance, the Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Bachelor of Science in Accounting may look identical. Both degrees have been designed to take four years to complete, and both usually contain 120 hours of coursework. The BA and BS in Accounting are both designed to help students attain the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in accounting.

The main difference between these two degrees lies in the underlying purpose of each program. While both the BA and BS in Accounting have been designed to equip the undergraduate student for a career in accounting, the Bachelor of Arts program will offer a more generalized and well-rounded curriculum. The BA will expose students to more subjects and allow them to choose electives that include topics outside those most related to accounting.

A Bachelor of Science in Accounting will offer less variety in general coursework and less elective choices. The BS in Accounting will offer more accounting and financial-themed courses for a deeper understanding of the concentration.

Both the BA and the BS in Accounting are great choices for the undergraduate student who wants to go on to become a CPA or work in an accounting department at a company. An online accounting bachelor’s degree is a wise option for a student looking for a flexible and convenient program.

What jobs can you get with an online accounting bachelor’s degree?

Some students are familiar with the general requirements of what it takes to become a Certified Public Accountant. There are 150 hours of coursework needed to be able to sit for the CPA Exam, and there are some excellent dual programs currently offered which allow students to complete a bachelor’s in accounting while receiving master’s level credit as well.

But what about students who would like to simply complete an undergraduate degree in accounting and join the workforce. Thankfully, there are many excellent job opportunities for professionals who are interested in applying for work after completing a BA or BS in Accounting. One popular position in accounting that is not regulated and requires no extra certifications is that of the internal auditor. An internal auditor is employed to analyze an organization’s spending and look for mismanagement and waste. An external auditor performs the same tasks as the internal auditor; however, she is not employed by the same company performing the audit.

Which online BA specialization pays the most?

It is no mystery that the completion of an undergraduate degree makes an employee more marketable and able to draw more earning power than those who have only completed a high school education. But what is a good concentration to pursue when considering all the choices now available to students interested in a business school? The world of accounting is as strong as ever, and organizations of all sizes depend on properly trained employees to keep their books and make sure they are keeping good financial records on a yearly basis. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 10% increase in this field projected until 2026 and a median salary of over $70,000 per year.
