Liberty University is a private, Christian institution of higher education located in Lynchburg, Virginia. Established in 1971 by Pastor Jerry Fallwell Sr. of Thomas Road Baptist Church, Liberty University began with less than 200 students and has since grown to become the fifth largest university in the United States and the largest Christian university in the world. Liberty University’s 7,000 acre campus is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and located on the southern bank of the historic James River region – an area rich in history and culture. Liberty University boasts several notable alumni including well known musicians, politicians, authors, athletes, and more.

Academic Programs

Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1980. Liberty University is divided into more than a dozen colleges and schools which cover the areas of: Aeronautics, Applied Studies & Academic Success, Arts & Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Business, Communication & Creative Arts, Divinity, Education, Engineering & Computational Sciences, Health Sciences, General Studies, Government, Law, Music, Nursing, and Osteopathic Medicine. More than 500 programs of study ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level are available through Liberty in fields such as education, counseling, religion, law, aviation, cinematic arts, business, and more.

Liberty University is also noted for being a pioneer in distance education since 1985. More than 95,000 students are enrolled in one of Liberty University’s 200+ online programs that range from certificate to doctorates. Online students are also given access to exceptional resources including Liberty University’s online library, the Online Writing Center (offered through a partnership with Tutor.com), and Liberty Online Communities, as well as knowledgeable and accessible academic advisors.

Student Life

More than 14,500 residential students are enrolled at Liberty University with students hailing from all fifty states and more than 75 foreign nations. Housing is offered in more than five traditional residence halls on campus as well as in The Annex, located just a short distance away. Liberty University’s campus is a busy one and students have opportunity to engage in a variety of recreational activities through Liberty’s Campus Recreational department which sponsors activities ranging from paintball to horseback riding, white water rafting trips to waterskiing, video game tournaments and more. In addition, Liberty’s Student Activities provides more than 100 events all throughout the school year including concerts, movie nights, trail races, off-campus trips and more.

Liberty University’s sponsors nearly two dozen varsity teams which compete at the NCAA Division I-AA level in the Big South Conference. In the last twenty years Liberty University’s teams boast over 140 NCAA Division I Conference titles as well as more than 6 Big South football championships.
