What’s the Difference Between a Primary Care and a Research Medical School?

The days of medical schools only training physicians with some research study is a relic of the past. Today’s medical schools are multifaceted in their degree and program offerings. As you’ve seen with this ranking, schools train students as primary care physicians, but also extend the MD to add a PhD or Masters in ancillary areas such as business administration (MD/MBA), law (MD/JD), or training as a physician-scientist (MSTP), etc. Some medical schools include public health, nursing, physician assistant, and others health professions under their educational umbrella.

Most medical schools offer primary care physician education and scientific research investigation opportunities for students. It may be more difficult to get in a research-focused medical school. However, if you have a deep scientific interest in cutting-edge medicine, technology, or development, you may want to find a the best medical school with a strong research program.

Research-focused schools usually receive significant external funding for programs as seen in this medical school ranking.

What Kinds of Factors Make Med Schools Rank High?

One of the most recognized ranking services, the U.S. News and World Report, looks at a variety of factors in their program surveys relying, in part, on self-reported data from the schools. Among those are quality and peer assessments, student admission standards and acceptance rates, average GPA and MCAT scores, and faculty qualifications and resources. Tuition costs and graduation rates are also factored when looking for the top medical schools. Research intensive medical schools are reviewed for funding levels and faculty accomplishments, as well as studies being conducted.

Increasingly, diversity and inclusionary rates are considered in a medical school’s overall ranking. Race and gender have become an important factor in a school’s ranking as medical schools work to include students more representative of the country’s population.

How Long is Medical School?

Attending medical school is, in itself, only four years in length. Graduating from a top medical school is step one in the process of becoming a physician. All medical schools offer the MD Primary Care degree which includes two years of clinical rotations.

However, before you can practice medicine, you’ll complete three to seven years of a residency program. If you pursue a specialty or subspecialty, you’ll need more residency and fellowship participation). Your overall time commitment can extend to 7-10+ years.

You’ll also be required to take the three part United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) to become a licensed physician. The USMLE is commonly referred to as the medical “boards” and all states require you have a license and also meet the individual state’s licensing requirements.

Note: This ranking and FAWs concentrates on top medical schools awarding the MD. You may also choose to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an osteopathic medical school. Osteopathic medicine takes a more holistic approach patient care, or the mind-body-spirit connection. DOs take the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA).
