Hamline University is a private liberal arts institution, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Named after Bishop Leonidas Lent Hamline of the United Methodist Church, Hamline University was established in 1854. Hamline is currently the only United Methodist university in the state and as such, seeks to foster a community ethic of both social justice and civic responsibility. Ranked at as the leading university in Minnesota and in the top ten by U.S. News & World Report in their ranking of the Best Regional Universities-Midwest, Hamline’s graduates include at least 45 Fulbright scholars, Rhodes scholars, and a Truman scholar. The university’s award-winningly beautiful campus features 77-acres and boasts environmentally-friendly features such as rain gardens, native flora, and energy efficient lighting.
Academic Programs
Hamline University holds accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees through its four schools, the College of Liberal Arts; School of Business; School of Education; and the Mitchell Hamline University of Law. Hamline provides students with a four-year graduation assurance, promising to pay the difference if a student does not earn their bachelor’s within four years. A number of degree options are also offered online through Hamline’s Schools of Business, Education, and Law – these include both fully online degrees as well as programs with low-residency requirements.One hundred percent of students complete an internship, collaborative research, service learning project, or field based research during their time Hamline. Hamline is also partnered with universities all around the globe, including in nations such as Chile, Germany, Spain, Japan, and China. Study abroad opportunities are offered to students in more than forty countries and approximately 600 students choose to study abroad each year.
Student Life
With an enrollment of more than 4,400 total students, including over 2,000 undergraduates, Hamline boasts a culturally rich living and learning environment. Undergraduate students come from nearly all 50 states and over thirty countries; graduate students hail from nearly forty countries. Financial aid is readily available, with more than 90% of students receiving needs- or merit-based gift aid. Hamline offers a number of on-campus residency options including traditional dormitories, apartments, and houses. Living on campus allows students to focus on their academic success, take on leadership roles, and become more involved in Hamline’s student community.More than 60 student organizations exist on campus, catering to a wide range of interests, cultures, and passions. Hamline’s campus is also conveniently located between the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, giving students easy access to over 600 businesses and attractions in an area that is known for its friendliness and diversity.
Hamline is known as the “birthplace of intercollegiate basketball”, having hosted and played in the world’s first intercollegiate basketball game in 1895. As an NCAA Division III school, Hamline is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and boasts a number of men’s and women’s varsity teams, nicknamed the “Pipers”.
