New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university, located in Newark, New Jersey and established in 1881. One of the leading public polytechnic universities in the nation, NJIT is devoted to preparing students to be leaders within the technology-dependent economy of the twenty-first century. Committed to economic development within Newark and the surrounding region, NJIT is one of the first institutions in the nation to have adopted economic development as one of its major objectives. As part of this commitment, NJIT operates a number of outreach centers which provide technical assistance for small and medium-sized companies in New Jersey for the purpose of helping them to become more globally competitive.
Academic Programs
The New Jersey Institute of Technology is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1934. The University’s mission is to prepare graduates for positions of leadership within the professional field; to provide education opportunities for a “broadly diverse student body”; to respond to the needs of businesses, state and local government agencies, as well as civic organizations; to partner with “educational institutions at all levels to accomplish its mission”; and to advance the “uses of sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a means of improving the quality of life.” NJIT’s vision is to be “a preeminent engineering, design, science and technology university known for research and education fostering innovation, enterprise, and engagement.”NJIT is made up of several colleges and schools, and offers more than 125 undergraduate and graduate programs. An ever-expanding institution, NJIT continually develops new educational opportunities in order to meet the changing needs of the marketplace. NJIT places strong emphasis on undergraduate research- the university’s Undergraduate Research and Innovation program not only teaches students how to conduct research but also how to choose projects which will help to improve societal problems and enhance the quality of life for communities.
Student Life
More than 10,000 students are enrolled at New Jersey Institute of Technology, including over 7,000 undergraduates. Approximately 50% of all freshmen and 25% of overall undergraduate students choose to live on campus in one of NJIT’s four fully wired, furnished residence halls. Over the last decade, NJIT has invested millions into its campus and research facilities, doubling it in size. The school’s campus features new eateries, rooftop gardens, computer labs, a bowling alley, and new fully loaded labs and research facilities including the Center for Applied Genomics. Located in the vibrant University Heights district of Newark, NJIT’s strategic location in New Jersey’s largest city and cultural and economic capital provides students with a wealth of opportunities for career-advancement, academics, and recreation. NJIT’s campus is just twenty minutes away from New York City by train.More than 90 student-led clubs and organizations exist, in addition to several fraternities and sororities, catering to a wide range of interests, passions, and backgrounds. Dozens of opportunities for community service projects are also offered, enhancing students’ lives and impacting their future. NJIT is an NCAA Division I-AAA school, and the school’s varsity athletic teams compete in the Atlantic Sun conference.
