Along the northern coast of California, just 8 miles north of Eureka is Arcata, CA, home of Humboldt State University, a 4-year public university. Established as a teacher’s college in 1913, Humboldt is the northernmost campus in the 23-school California State University system. The school was renamed Humboldt State College in 1935 after the famous German scientist Alexander von Humboldt. In 1972, the college was renamed California State University, Humboldt, but retained its cultural identity as ‘Humboldt State.’ The 144 acre main campus features many buildings in a Spanish-colonial architectural style. The campus is adjacent to Arcata Community Forest, an 800 acre Redwood forest, which plays a large part of the educational programs as well as recreation. Notable alumni of Humboldt include Stephen Hillenburg (creator of SpongeBob SquarePants).
