Academic Programs

Humboldt State University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior College and University Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in 48 majors. Presently, only certain Master’s programs are available online. The university is comprised of three schools: the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the College of Natural Resources and Sciences; and the College of Professional Studies. Humboldt is also noted for Nursing, Music and Art & Design; the largest programs are Natural Resources & Conservation, Social Sciences and Biology/Biomedical Sciences. Per the Mission statement, “Humboldt State University is a comprehensive, residential campus of the California State University. We welcome students from California and the world to our campus. We offer them access to affordable, high-quality education that is responsive to the needs of a fast-changing world. We serve them by providing a wide array of programs and activities that promote understanding of social, economic and environmental issues. We help individuals prepare to be responsible members of diverse societies.” Notable is the additional educational resources available to students – a marine biology research center; public natural history museum; bay-side aquatics facility; mountain-top astronomy observatory; ocean-going marine research/teaching vessel (Coral Sea);and the forest.

Student Life

Humboldt State University has over 8,000 undergraduate students, the majority of whom live on campus in one of the 5 residence halls or the campus apartments. There is a broad selection of clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the green and gold Lumberjacks field teams in 7 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition (led by Lucky Logger, the mascot). The Marching Lumberjacks (aka the “Banned”) is the official school marching band, performing in the “scatter band” style and using humor during half-time shows in Redwood Bowl. Students are trained under the Vision of the school: Student who seek to improve the human condition and environment; Learn through an interdisciplinary study of the environment and its natural resources; Strive for social and environmental responsibility; and Core Values: An environment of free inquiry where learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom; Intellectual growth through scholarship, creative activities and research; Dignity of all individuals; We have a special opportunity to learn from the Native American cultures, the unique ecosystem and special communities of our region.
