With the cost of college tuition continuously on the rise with no signs of slowing down, many black and African-American students are looking for ways that they can alleviate the financial pressure placed upon them by tuition costs and student loans. For many black high school students, a college education may just seem too cost-prohibitive to even consider. As college educations become expected more and more in the workplace, these students are put between a rock and a hard place trying to decide whether to eschew a college education and potentially limit their career success, or enroll in a degree program but accrue large amounts of student debt. Fortunately, there is another option: scholarships.

Scholarships are a great way for students to get money that they can apply to their college bills. While most students think that scholarships are too hard to get and not worth the time to apply for due to their scarcity, they couldn’t be more wrong. It is estimated that $46 billion in scholarship money is made available each year to students. This is immense amounts of free money just waiting to be claimed by students. Many of these scholarships are made available to students based upon cultural heritage or ethnic background.

One of the larger categories of scholarships are scholarships made available to African-American students. This entire subset of scholarship money is solely available to African-Americans pursuing higher education. Supported by programs and institutions dedicated to helping black students gain a college education and succeed in the workforce without incurring massive amounts of student debt, these scholarship programs can be incredibly helpful. Here’s a list of the largest scholarships available to black and African-American students.

Founded in 1975, the PUSH for Excellence organization was created by Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. A prominent figure in the African American community, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson wanted to create a program that would work to promote the equity and excellence in the educational community. One of the primary concerns of the PUSH for Excellence organization was the fair allotment of educational resources to students despite their cultural background. Having partnered with many different educators, the PUSH for Excellence organization has been able to grow and to continue to support its mission of promoting excellence in education.

One of the ways that the PUSH for Excellence organization has continued to help promote educational excellence has been through the creation of the Jesse Jackson Fellows – Toyota Scholarship. Through a partnership with Toyota Motor Company, the PUSH for Excellence organization has been able to create one of the biggest scholarships available to African American students. Created in 2013, the Jesse Jackson Fellows – Toyota Scholarship has been awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence as well as shown that they have worked to promote the communities from which they came from. If selected for the Jesse Jackson Fellows – Toyota Scholarship, students are awarded $25,000 to put towards their college education. This amount can be renewed up to two additional times potentially yielding $75,000 in scholarship aid.

Screen Shot 2018 05 19 at 2.31.10 PMThe Ron Brown Scholarship is awarded to students through the Ron Brown Scholar Fund.  A public charity, the Ron Brown Scholar Fund was originally started by the CAP Charitable Foundation. Named after the Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown, the Ron Brown Scholar Program was established to award outstanding African American students. A prominent global figure and influential African American, Ron Brown was the first African American to serve in the cabinet as the Secretary of Commerce as well as the first African American to serves as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Tragically, Ron Brown’s life was cut short in a plane accident in 1996. Since then, the Ron Brown Scholar Program has been working to raise money to award to African American students that continue his legacy.

One of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans, the Ron Brown Scholarship works to find students who embody the values of Ron Brown’s legacy. Since starting in 1996, more than 300 Ron Brown Scholars have been named. To become a Ron Brown Scholar, the Ron Brown Scholarship Fund looks for African American students who are talented academically and have shown a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship. The Ron Brown Scholarship program also works to aid those who are in financial need of scholarship money as well. If selected for the Ron Brown Scholars program, students will receive $40,000 awarded to them in increments of $10,000 over the course of four years. They will also take part in a telementoring program to help them succeed in college known as the Guided Pathway Support program.

Started by Bill Gates in 1975, Microsoft is one of the largest software development companies in the entire world. Having become integral to the development of the personal computer, Microsoft is now known for its Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Xbox platforms. As a leader in the world of technology and innovation, Microsoft has taken it upon itself to make sure that they are doing all they can with their position of power within the industry. Wanting to ensure that students from all walks of life are inspired to work in the technology industry, Microsoft has implemented a variety of different programs designed to attract students to enter into the technology industry.

One of the biggest scholarships available to African American students, the Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship is not just a scholarship. While it does offer financial aid to students, the Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship is also a network designed to help inspire African American students to collaborate and grow within the Microsoft Corporation. The Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship is awarded to students in who are entering into college in pursuit of an engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or certain business programs. These students must demonstrate a passion for technology and show leadership within their school and community. If selected for the Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship, students will be awarded $5,000 that can be renewed annually for a total of $20,000.

Founded and chartered by the United States Congress in 1876, the American Chemical Society is now the world’s largest scientific society. With a membership of over 150,000 people spanning across 150 different countries, the American Chemical Society is home to the world’s leading professionals in chemistry. The American Chemical Society works daily to promote the chemistry enterprise in order to benefit the people of the world. Through supporting the chemistry professionals of the world, the American Chemical Society hopes to change the world through the transformative power of chemistry. In order to do so the American Chemical Society works to inspire students to enter into the field of chemistry.

One of the ways that the American Chemical Society inspires students to enter into the field of chemistry is through the ACS Scholars Program. Awarding approximately $900,000 annually to over 350 different students, the ACS Scholars Program is designed to help provide scholarship aid to underrepresented minority groups that are majoring or planning to major in chemistry-related disciplines within their undergraduate studies. Today, over 3,000 students have been named ACS Scholars. To be selected as an ACS Scholar, students must demonstrate high academic performance throughout their high school career while also demonstrating a desire to enter into the field of chemistry. If selected for the ACS Scholars Program, students will be rewarded up to $5,000 each academic year for a potential total of $20,000 in scholarship money.

Established in 1919, the American Meteorological Society was created as the premier scientific and professional organization within the United States dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of information relating to the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences. Since its creation, the American Meteorological Society has grown to include 13,000 members including educators, enthusiasts, students, researchers, broadcasters, and more. One of the main functions of the American Meteorological Society is to ensure that the meteorology industry continues to grow and that tomorrow’s students are excited about studying meteorological sciences today. In order to do that, the American Meteorological Society offers students a variety of different scholarship to entice them into entering this industry.

One such scholarship offered by the American Meteorological Society is the AMS Minority Scholarship. One of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans, the AMS Minority Scholarship is designed to promote the study of topics related to meteorology among minority groups. Funded through the AMS Giving Program, the AMS Minority Scholarship is awarded to students based upon their academic performance in their high school careers. Students must also plan to pursue a career in atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences in order to be eligible for this scholarship. If selected, students will be awarded a $6,000 scholarship that will be awarded to them over the course of two years in $3,000 increments.

Funded jointly by the United States Department of State and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship was created to honor the late congressman Benjamin A. Gilman. From New York, Benjamin A. Gilman was the creator of the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. Through this act, Benjamin A. Gilman wanted to help students who were from backgrounds with limited financial means to allow them to spend time abroad gaining a worldly education. Believing that seeing the world was crucial to developing a healthy perspective on life and culture, Benjamin A. Gilman didn’t want that opportunity to only be made available to students who came from families with high financial means.

Now one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship has been awarded to over 2,900 students over the course of the past seventeen years. Administered by the Institute of International Education, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship has been operational since 2001. Since then, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship has awarded money to many different minority students. To be selected for a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, students must demonstrate high academic performance as well those with high financial needs. If selected for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, students will be awarded up to $5,000 in financial assistance for their education at a college or university of their choosing.

Founded in 1956, the Council for the Great City Schools was established to bring together the event of the United States’ largest urban public school systems. Through the collaboration of these seventy different school systems, the Council of the Great City Schools began working to help improve the quality of education for students living in the inner cities. Wanting to combat the trend of inner city schools falling by the wayside, the Council for the Great City Schools began working to promote and advocate the needs of students enrolled in schools throughout the country’s major cities. Through the work of the Council for the Great City Schools, the quality of education within the inner cities has increased.

One of the ways that the Council for the Great City Schools has been able to promote the education of those from the inner cities is through the creation of the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship. Sponsored by ExxonMobil, the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship is named after former astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris. Established in 2010, this scholarship is made available to students who are from underrepresented groups and are choosing to pursue STEM fields of study. Every year, two Hispanic students and two African American students are selected for the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship. Each student is awarded $5,000 in scholarship money for the college or university of their choosing helping to make this one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Established in 1973, the LULAC National Education Service Center, Inc. is a nationwide nonprofit organization established to help the nation’s disadvantaged youth. Over the course of the past forty years the LULAC National Education Service Centers, Inc., was founded to provide educational initiatives to students who were being underserved by the already available education programs in their communities. Founded by the League of United Latin American Citizens, the LULAC National Education Service Centers, Inc. was a move to help those who were not represented in the American educational system. Today, the LULAC National Educational Service Centers continues to help students reach the highest educational goals. 

One of the biggest scholarships available to African American students, the GE/LNESC Scholarship is awarded to minority students to help them fund the completion of their college education. Targeting minority students, the GE/LNESC Scholarship is offered in a partnership between the General Electric Foundation and the LNESC. This scholarship program is offered to students who are rising sophomores in college. These students must be interested in careers in either business or engineering. If chosen for the GE/LNESC Scholarship, students will be awarded $5,000 in scholarship money to be applied to the college or university that they are currently attending. This amount of money will help students alleviate some of the financial strain that can be caused by a college education.

Founded in 1934, the Society for American Archaeology was created as an international organization that was dedicated to promoting the archaeological heritage of the Americas. Through the promotion of research, interpretation, and protection of archaeological works, the Society for American Archaeology has been a major force in maintaining the overall cultural importance of archaeological work. Today, the Society of American Archaeology has grown to include more than 7,500 members. Working across different government agencies, colleges, universities, museums, and more, the Society for American Archaeology is working hard to secure the future of archaeology. 

One of the ways that the Society for American Archaeology is working to promote the future of archaeology is through the SAA Historically Underrepresented Groups Scholarship. The SAA Historically Underrepresented Groups Scholarship was created as a way to attract minority students towards obtaining a degree in archaeology. Overseen by the Minority Scholarships Committee of the SAA, the SAA Historically Underrepresented Groups Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated high academic performance. If selected students will be given the opportunity to not only receive financial assistance for their education but also the ability to take part in enriching activities related to archaeology. Students who win this scholarship are awarded $5,000 in funding towards their education.

Established in 1905, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company is now the supplier for electricity and natural gas to over two-thirds of California. A major publicly traded corporation, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company is one of the United States’ largest utility businesses. Through the massive amount of wealth that the Pacific Gas & Electric Company has generated, a variety of different philanthropical ventures have also been started. Wanting to use some of the money earned by the company to help make for a brighter tomorrow, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company has started a variety of different initiatives to work with people to help invest back into the community. One of the ways that Pacific Gas & Electric Company does this is through a wide array of scholarships.

One such scholarship is the Pacific Gas & Electric Company Black ERG Scholarship. One of the biggest scholarships available to African American students, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company Black ERG Scholarship is designed to energize African American students and to get them motivated to pursue a variety of STEM, business, environmental, or energy-related majors. Wanting to help encourage more African Americans to study these different degree programs, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company offers these grants and scholarships as an incentive to attract bright African American students. If selected for the Pacific Gas & Electric Company Black ERG Scholarship, students are awarded up to $5,000 in scholarship money that they can apply to the college or university of their choosing.

Founded in December 1969, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. was created in New York City in order to figure out a way to encourage more African Americans to enter into the profession of accountancy. At the time, out of the 100,000 accountants in the United States, only 136 of them were African Americans. Wanting to create more equality in this field of work, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. was created in order to come up with ways to encourage more African American students to pursue accountancy. Today, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. has grown to include over 200,000 black professionals. Through a variety of initiatives the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. has introduced more African Americans into accountancy.

One of the ways that the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. has introduced more African Americans into accountancy has been through the creation of the NABA Corporate Partner Scholarship Scholarship program. Through this scholarship program, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. has partnered with a variety of different corporations to sponsor scholarships designed to reward African American students who choose to study accounting or finances while enrolled in college. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must be an active NABA member, be enrolled in a qualifying program, and have a GPA of over 3.5. If selected students can earn up to $5,000 in scholarship money to be applied to the college or university of their choosing making this one of the biggest scholarship available to African American students.

Founded in 1944, the United Negro College Fund was created to help minority students pursue a college degree. Since the creation of the United Negro College Fund, the number of minority students that are attending university and colleges has doubled. Today, the United Negro College Fund has raised more than $4.8 billion and has helped more than 450,000 minority students fund their education. Noticing a lack of diversity in college students, the United Negro College Fund has worked tirelessly to attract more and more minority students to higher education through the use of scholarship and grant money to help students realize they can afford a higher education.

One such scholarship is the The UNCF/ Comcast NBCUniversal Corporate Scholarship program. One of the biggest scholarships available for African American students, the The UNCF/ Comcast NBCUniversal Corporate Scholarship program is made possible through a partnership with the Comcast NBCUniversal. Available to all minorities, the The UNCF/ Comcast NBCUniversal Corporate Scholarship program is designed to provide college students interested in a career in entertainment with financial support towards their college education. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must already be enrolled in an entertainment-related field of study. If selected for this degree program, students will receive up to $10,000 in scholarship money to be applied to the college or university of their choosing.

Established in 1994, The Actuarial Foundation was created as a philanthropic organization dedicated to the promotion of the actuarial industry. Wanting to work with young people to ensure that math education and financial literacy continued to be important going into the future, the Actuarial Foundation works to fund and create programs that attract students to work in these industries. The Actuarial Foundation believes that an educated public will help to ensure that everybody benefits from a secure financial future. Wanting to ensure the secure financial future of students, The Actuarial Foundation offers students the opportunity to enroll in a variety of different scholarship programs in order to offset some of the cost of a college education. 

One of these scholarships is known as the Actuarial Diversity Scholarship. Wanting to promote diversity within the actuarial industry, The Actuarial Foundation has created this scholarship to attract students from minority backgrounds to study topics related to the actuarial industry. Offered to students based upon their academic performance, students must also have demonstrated an interest in studying a degree that is related to the actuarial industry. If selected for the Actuarial Diversity Scholarship, students will receive $4,000 in scholarship money to be applied to the university or college of their choosing making it one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Founded in 1903, the Illinois CPA Society is one of the largest CPA societies in the United States. Operating for over a century, the Illinois CPA Society works to enhance the value of the CPA profession. Through a variety of different programs and outreach, the Illinois CPA Society works to ensure that the public is aware of the value of those working as Certified Public Accountants. Crucial to helping people manage their finances, CPAs work hard to help people make wise financial decisions. The Illinois CPA Society has been working with its affiliates since its creation to help educate people about CPAs as well as attract young people to get the education needed to become a Certified Public Accountant.

One of the ways that the Illinois CPA Society has worked to attract students towards working as Certified Public Accountants is through the creation of scholarships like the Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarship. One of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans, the Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarship is named after distinguished physician Dr. Herman J. Neal. This scholarship is offered to students who are planning to pursue a college education. They are selected for this scholarship based on their academic performance. Awarded to several individuals each year, the Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarship awards students up to $4,000 to be put towards the college or university of their choosing.

The Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers was founded in 1948 to help support industrial and systems engineers across the world. Integral to the proper flow of any industry, industrial and systems engineers examine different organizational systems in order to help streamline them and make them work more efficiently. The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers was created in order to help these industrial and systems engineers find the right organizations across the world that are in need of their help. Focusing on the promotion of the industrial engineering trade, The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers works to promote and attract people to this field of work.

One of the ways that the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers promotes careers in industrial engineering is through the creation of scholarships such as the IISE UPS Scholarship for Minority Students. Sponsored by the United Parcel Service, the IISE UPS Scholarship for Minority Students provide financial support to minority students who are interested in a career working in industrial or systems engineering. Available to students who are entering into college, the IISE UPS Scholarship for Minority Students helps to provide financial support for African American students who are committed to studying industrial or systems engineering. If selected for this scholarship, students will receive $4,000 in scholarship money to be applied to the college or university of their choosing.

A nonprofit nonpartisan public policy, research, and educational institute, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation was established in 1971. Founded to advance the global black community, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has worked tirelessly on behalf of black people across the globe since its creation. Working to fight for equality in the United States as well as abroad, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is integral to creating a more equitable society for people of all backgrounds. One of the major areas of focus for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is the area of equality in education. Wanting to ensure that people of all backgrounds have access to a quality education, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has started many initiatives focused on working towards this goal.

One of the ways that the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has worked to promote education has been through the creation of scholarships like the CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship. Offered to students who are planning to major in visual arts, the CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship was created in order to encourage African American students to study the visual arts in order to help create more representation within this field of study. In order to be selected for the CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship, students must demonstrate their academic standing as well as why they are most deserving of this scholarship. If selected, students will be awarded $3,000 in scholarship money to the college or university of their choosing.

Established by the Entertainment Software Association in January 2000, the Entertainment Software Association Foundation was founded in order to help promote the future of innovation in the field of entertainment software and video gaming. Wanting to help attract and promote the brightest young talent, the Entertainment Software Association Foundation has worked to provide aid and support to the next generation of industry innovators. Leveraging the power and resources of the Entertainment Software Association, the Entertainment Software Association Foundation hopes to encourage students from all walks of life to enter into the industry of entertainment software. One of the ways that the Entertainment Software Association Foundation has accomplished this is through the offering of scholarships to students.

One such scholarship is the ESA Foundation Scholarship Program. Created in 2007, the ESA Foundation Scholarship Program was created in order to attract minority students and women to careers in computer and video game arts. Originally only offering fifteen scholarships, the ESA Foundation Scholarship Program is now made available to thirty students nationwide. Offered to African American students as well as other minority students and women, the ESA Foundation Scholarship Program is awarded to students with high academic standing who have demonstrated a desired to work in the entertainment software industry. If selected for the ESA Foundation Scholarship Program, students will receive $3,000 in scholarship aid to the college or university of their choosing making this one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Established in 1926, the American Bus Association is one of the oldest and most respected voices in the motor coach, travel, and tour industry. Created in order to provide support for motor coach operators, tour operators, and products and services supplier nationwide, the American Bus Association has now grown to include over 1,000 motor coach and tour companies in the United States and Canada. An additional 2,800 members are part of the American Bus Association representing the travel and tourism industry. Yearly, the American Bus Association meets at Marketplace to join together to discuss the industry. One way that they have been able to support the industry is through the creation of the ABA Foundation.

The ABA Diversity Scholarship is one of the initiatives started by ABA Foundation. Created to promote the continued research and scholarship in the motorcoach and tour industry, ABA Foundation created the ABA Diversity Scholarship to award money to groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the operation ranks of the transportation, travel, and tourism industry. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must demonstrate high academic standing and must be studying a degree related to the industry. If selected, students will receive $2,500 to put towards the college or university of their choice making this one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Founded in 1988, the Page Education Foundation was created in honor of Alan Page. A member of the NFL Hall of Fame, Alan Page now serves as a Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Creating the Page Education Foundation with his wife Diane Sims Page, the Page Education Foundation was started in order to help African American and other minority students to gain the financial support that they need to continue on to higher education. Through money raised by donors, the Page Education Foundation has been able to start a number of initiatives that have been useful to helping African American students get a college education.

One such way that the Page Education Foundation has been able to help African American students is through the creation of the Page Education Foundation Grant. One of the largest scholarships available to African Americans, the Page Education Foundation Grant offers money to African American students who have demonstrated high academic performance in their high school career. Students who are selected for the Page Education Foundation Grant are not only awarded money but they are also assigned a mentor that will help guide them through their college experience. Through this mentorship, the Page Education Foundation hopes to ensure that students will get the most out of their college degree. LAGRANT Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship

Founded in Los Angeles in 1998, The LAGRANT Foundation was started by Mr. Kim L. Hunter in order to address the problem of diversity in his field of work. Working in advertising, marketing, and public relations, Mr. Kim L. Hunter noticed a lack of diversity within these industries. Wanting to help address this problem, he created The LAGRANT Foundation. Through his foundation, Mr. Kim L. Hunter worked to create ways to attract minority students to the advertising, marketing, and public relations field. Since its creation, The LAGRANT Foundation has raised over $2.13 million that it has disbursed to 411 different minority students.

The primary way that The LAGRANT Foundation has been able to address diversity problems within the field of advertising, marketing, and public relations is through the creation of The LAGRANT Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship. Created to award minority students who decided to study advertising, marketing or public relations, The LAGRANT Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship has been awarded to many different students over the past two decades. One of the biggest scholarships available to African America students, The LAGRANT Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to students with high academic performance who are choosing to pursue fields related to marketing, advertising or public relations. If selected for The LAGRANT Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship, students will be awarded $2,500 to be used at the university or college of their choosing.

Founded in 1938, the American Association of School Personnel Administration was founded to help school personnel professionals. Working to support human resource administrators, personnel support staff, superintendents, and principals, the American Association of School Personnel Administration is dedicated to the professional development, networking, and support of school administration personnel. Part of the American Association of School Personnel Administration’s mission is to encourage students to study to enter into this career path. Through a variety of different initiatives, the American Association of School Personnel Administration has helped students enter into this field.

One of the initiatives offered by the American Association of School Personnel Administration is the Leon Bradley Scholarship. Created to help encourage minority students to study how to enter into leadership positions within schools and other educational organizations, the Leon Bradley Scholarship has supported many students in their dream to work as a principal or superintendent. Noticing a lack of diversity in these positions, the Leon Bradley Scholarship provides financial support to minority students. In order to be selected for the Leon Bradley Scholarship. Students must demonstrate high academic performance and a desire to work in school personnel administration. If selected students will receive a $2,000 scholarship making this one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Annie S. Alexander Memorial Scholarship

Founded in 1919, the Winston-Salem Foundation is a community foundation made up of a collection of over 1,300 funds created by a variety of individuals and organizations. The Winston-Salem Foundation was created to help enrich the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Through The Winston-Salem Foundation, the city of Winston-Salem has been able to invest in its own community through philanthropy. Starting with a donation of $1,000 from Col. Francis Fries in 1919, The Winston-Salem Foundation has grown to being worth over $605 million. With this amassed wealth, the Winston-Sale Foundation has offered support to many individuals in need of financial assistance.

One of the ways that the Winston-Salem Foundation has been able to help students is through the Annie S. Alexander Memorial Scholarship. Available to any African American student, with preference going to those from Winston-Salem, the Annie S. Alexander Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 in order to provide financial support to minority students interested in seeking out an education in nursing. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must demonstrate high academic performance while also choosing to enroll in an undergraduate in nursing degree. If selected for this scholarship, students will receive $1,800 in scholarship money that can be used towards the college or university of their choosing.

Better Brothers LA Scholarship

A nonprofit organization, Better Brothers Los Angeles was established to help connect and inspire the Black LGBTQ community within Southern California. Wanting to support this group of individuals, Better Brothers Los Angeles has worked to provide a community for black LGBTQ individuals in order to help them overcome cultural and religious opposition to their orientation. Offering a variety of year round social, educational, and affirming programming, Better Brothers Los Angeles is anchored by an annual ceremony called the Truth Awards. Once a year, Better Brothers Los Angeles holds the Truth Awards Ceremony to honor Black LGBTQ members and allies. 

One of the other ways that Better Brothers Los Angeles works to help Black LGBTQ students is through the creation of the Better Brothers LA Book Scholarship. Designed to support black LGBTQ students, the Better Brothers LA Book Scholarship was created to help these students have enough money to help pay for their textbooks and other supplies for their college degree programs. While tuition prices have continued to rise, so have the costs of textbooks and other educational supplies. Recognizing this growing trends, the Better Brothers LA Book Scholarship works to help provide money to students who are still trying to pay for their books and supplies. Offered to black LGBTQ students with high academic performance, students who are selected for this scholarship are awarded up to $1,500 in scholarship money making this one of the biggest scholarships available to African Americans.

Established in 1933 as the Ohio Newspaper Association, the Ohio News Media Association was formed through a partnership of The Buckeye Press Association and The Associated Ohio Dailies. These two organizations joined together in order to provide information with one another and also to help sell advertising. Through this initial partnership, the Ohio Newspaper Association continued to grow and grow and become a major force in the Ohio news community. Today, the Ohio News Media Association has grown to become a state trade association that represents all of Ohio’s daily and weekly newspapers. Representing the best interest of all these publications, one of the functions of the Ohio News Media Association is to attract new talent into the industry.

One such way that the Ohio News Media Association has worked to attract new talent into the news industry is through the creation of scholarships. One of the biggest scholarships available to African American students, the Ohio News Media Association Minority Scholarship is offered to students to minority students in Ohio who are planning to enroll in an undergraduate field in a newspaper industry related field such as journalism, advertising, marketing, or communications. Students are selected for this program based upon academic performance as well as their ability to demonstrate their desire to work in a journalism-related field. If selected for the Ohio News Media Association Minority Scholarship, that student will be awarded $1,500 in scholarship money to the college or university of their choosing.

Established in 2014, the BLM Squared Scholarship Foundation is named after Bernard L Macon Jr and his wife Brandy L Macon. A nonprofit organization, The BLM Squared Scholarship Foundation was founded with the mission of giving through investment in young adults in order to inspire and encourage young adults to pursue a higher education and to use their higher education to serve others. Only four years old, The BLM Squared Scholarship has managed to provide over $6,000 in scholarship funding to students since its starting. Wanting to ensure that students of all backgrounds are encouraged to pursue a higher education, The BLM Squared Scholarship Foundation continues to raise money to inspire students to pursue a higher education.

One of the biggest scholarships available to African American students, The BLM Squared Scholarship is awarded every year to both a male and female minority student. Chosen based upon their academic performance and their ability to show how they have been able to give back to their communities, The BLM Squared Scholars are asked to continue to give back to their communities after they have completed their education. If selected for The BLM Squared Scholarship, students will receive $1,000 in scholarship funding to the college or university of their choosing. Through this gracious donation, The BLM Squared Scholarship Foundation has earned its place among the biggest scholarships available to African American students.
