Find Your Degree

It’s a fact we all know about college: it can be really expensive. As the need for a college education has increased so has the overall price of a college education. With tuition prices on the rise and no sign of that increase slowing down, many Hispanic and Latino students are unsure of how they will find the money to fund their college education. While student loans are a great option for funding a college education, they do result in large student loan payments that can sometimes be really hard for students to get out from under. In searching for ways to control the rising cost of a college education, students are hoping that they can find some sort of way to decrease how much they’ll have to spend.

One of the best ways that students can accomplish this is through the use of scholarships. Scholarships are a great way to decrease the overall cost of a college degree. To put it simply, a scholarship is free money awarded to students who meet certain criteria that can be applied to the cost of a college education. Some might say it sounds too good to be true or if it is true that there is probably a limited supply of scholarship money available, but they’d be wrong. According to the U.S. Department of Education, $46 billion dollars worth of scholarship money is made available to students annually. That’s $46 billion dollars worth of education that is being given away to students with little to no strings attached. For Latino students who are wondering how to control the cost of their education, a scholarship just might be the answer.

Scholarships are offered to students on many different bases. One of the biggest ways that scholarships are made available is to students from different minority groups. Recognizing a history of inequality and underrepresentation in higher education, many companies and organizations have formed to raise money for students from traditionally underrepresented groups to provide scholarship aid in order to promote and entice students into pursuing a college degree. One such category of scholarships are scholarships made available to Latino and Hispanic students. To encourage more Latino/Hispanic students to pursue a college education by eliminating some of their college debt, these scholarships provide qualifying students with the opportunity to cut the cost of their college education. imageThe Davila/Trevino Memorial Scholarship is made available to students by Great Minds in STEM. Established in 1989 as HENAAC, Great Minds in STEM is a nonprofit organization created to bring greater awareness to STEM careers within the Hispanic community. Sensing a lack of diversity among STEM professionals, Great Minds in STEM was established to attract more Hispanic students to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Since its creation, Great Minds in STEM has done great work in championing STEM careers among Hispanic students. They’ve offered students from across the United States recruitment opportunities, educational resources, as well as scholarship money to help students to realize their goal of becoming a STEM professional.

One of the biggest scholarships available to Hispanic/Latino students, the Davila/Trevino Memorial Scholarship offers ten students each year scholarship funding towards their education in a STEM-related field. Named after David Davila and Joe Trevino, the Davila/Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who exemplify the Davila/Trevino motto, “this who are willing to work hard; achieve your goals; remember where you came from and always give back.” Selected based upon academic performance, students who are chosen to receive the Davila Trevino Memorial Scholarship will receive $1,000 in scholarship funding to the college or university of their choosing.
