The University of Illinois at Chicago (abbreviated UIC) is a public research university located in Chicago, Illinois. Established in 1928, UIC came into existence when two University of Illinois campuses, the Medical Center campus and the comprehensive Chicago Circle campus, were consolidated into one. Today, UIC has become the largest university in the Chicago area and is ranked among the best national universities by the U.S. News & World Report. In addition to its main campus in Chicago, UIC also operates several campuses across Illinois through which the College of Medicine, the nation’s largest medical school, offers programs. These regional campus locations include Peoria, Quad Cities, Rockford, Springfield, and Urbana.
Academic Programs
University of Illinois at Chicago is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1970. More than 80 bachelor’s programs are offered as well as over two hundred master’s, doctoral, and graduate certificate programs.UIC is made up of several colleges and schools. These include the College of Applied Health Sciences which houses five departments: biomedical and health information sciences, disability and human development, kinesiology and nutrition, and occupational therapy and physical therapy; the College of Architecture, Design and the Arts, which consists of four schools: art and art history, design, theatre, music; the College of Business Administration; the College of Dentistry; the College of Education; the College of Engineering; the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; the College of Medicine; the College of Nursing, which is ranked as one of the best in the state and nation; the College of Pharmacy; the School of Public Health, which is the only public health school in the state of Illinois which is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health; the Jane Addams College of Social Work; the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs; UIC’s Honors College; and the Graduate College.
Student Life
University of Illinois at Chicago’s enrollment figure reaches nearly 30,000, including over 17,000 undergraduate students. UIC is among the most diverse campuses in the nation and is a national leader among urban, public higher educational institutions in access provided to underrepresented students. Situated on a 244 acre campus, four Intracampus Bus help students travel from the east to west sides of campus and vice versa. UIC’s location in Chicago offers students an abundance of academic and career advancement, cultural, and recreational opportunities. On-campus, a number of student-led clubs and organizations allow students to get involved and connect with fellow students outside of the classroom. As an NCAA Division I-AAA school, UIC’s varsity athletic teams compete in the Horizon League.UIC offers an abundance of housing options all over campus. Many of UIC’s undergraduates live minutes away from the University’s lecture Halls, Student Center East and Student Recreational Center on the campus’ east side. More residence hall options exist on UIC’s south side, including James Stukel Towers, Marie Robinson Hall and Thomas Beckham Hall; these offer beautiful views of the Chicago skyline. Even more housing options exist on the west side of campus as well in nearby neighborhoods off-campus.
