St John’s University-New York is a private, 4-year Roman Catholic school located in Queens, NY. The school was founded in 1870 by the Congregation of the Mission in Brooklyn as the College of St John the Baptist. It reached University status in 1933. In the 1950’s, the school was relocated to its present location in Hillcrest, Queens. The school also maintains campuses in Staten Island and Manhattan, as well as Rome, Italy. The 100+ acre campus features a blend of collegiate Gothic and contemporary architecture. The campus is centered around “The Great Lawn” which serves as a central quad for several academic buildings. The campus has a surprising spacious “feel” despite its urban location. Notable alumni include former NY Governor Mario Cuomo and ESPN sportscaster Brian Kenny.

Academic Programs

St John’s University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in 100+ fields of study. The school also offers 6 undergraduate degrees and 19 graduate degrees online. The University includes six schools and colleges: St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Education, Peter J. Tobin School of Business, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, College of Professional Studies and School of Law. Noted for Pharmacy and Healthcare, Teacher Education and Art & Design, the largest programs on campus are in Business, Communications and Health professions. Per the Mission Statement, “we commit ourselves to academic excellence and the pursuit of wisdom, which flows from free inquiry, religious values, and human experience. We strive to preserve and enhance an atmosphere in which scholarly research, imaginative methodology, global awareness, and an enthusiastic quest for truth serve as the basis of a vital teaching-learning process and the development of lifelong learning… We aim not only to be excellent professionals with an ability to analyze and articulate clearly what is, but also to develop the ethical and aesthetic values to imagine and help realize what might be.”

Student Life

There are over 16,000 undergraduate students enrolled in St John’s University, many of whom live on campus among the 8 residence halls and living communities. The University sponsors over 150 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red, white and blue Red Storm field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. St John’s is also noted for performing arts including 2 choral groups: University Mixed Chorus and Voices of Victory Gospel Choir.
