Founded in 1916 as the Eau Claire State Normal School, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is a top-ranked regional college in western Wisconsin. Part of the University of Wisconsin System, one of the most impressive public higher education systems in the nation, UW-Eau Claire began by preparing teachers in the normal method – an experiential 2-year program that was once the standard for teacher training. While the school grew into a teacher’s college, then a state university, Eau Claire added programs in the most in-demand areas of traditional and nontraditional education, earning recognition as one of U.S. News & World Report’s top 40 regional colleges for the Midwest.

Academic Programs

As a regional university, UWEC provides a comprehensive set of undergraduate and graduate degree programs geared to meet the needs of the modern workforce. Not surprisingly, since Eau Claire began in teacher training, the College of Education and Human Sciences is recognized as one of the best in the region, with hundreds of partner sites for internship and employment after graduation. The College of Business is also nationally ranked, and especially respected for its MBA program, while the School of Nursing and Health Sciences offers comprehensive degrees from the BSN to the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Both business and nursing programs can proudly proclaim a 99% placement rate for graduates, thanks to UWEC’s reputation and connections.

UW-Eau Claire is also dedicated to adult education, and programs for working adults and other nontraditional students. Eau Claire is one of the top online educators in Wisconsin, with a fully online BSN completion degrees, and numerous online master’s programs in areas like Data Science and Education. Eau Claire is also part of the the UW system’s nationally-recognized Online MBA Consortium, a groundbreaking collaborative project in which several UW institutions bring together their expertise to create one of the best online MBA programs in the nation.

Student Life

With well over 11,000 students, from traditional-aged residential undergraduates to working adults, commuters, and online students, UW-Eau Claire has a place for everyone. In addition to three fraternities and three sororities, UWEC offers more than 200 student-led clubs and organizations, from the Adventure Club to Women’s Rugby. UW-Eau Claire is also a center for arts and culture in the area, especially music. Eau Claire’s library has one of the nation’s premier jazz archives, and the university is home to one of the largest annual jazz festivals in the US, along with more than 50 ensembles, choirs, and groups.

The Eau Claire Blugolds – a straightforward nickname, since their colors are blue and gold – compete in the NCAA Division III in 20 men’s and women’s varsity sports. The Blugolds have taken home national championships in track and field, softball, ice hockey, and numerous other sports. Students can also take part in more than two dozen club sports, including bowling, MMA, and Waterskiing, and a number of competitive intramural sports.
