Biola University is a private, coeducational Christian institution located in La Mirada, California. Established in 1908, Biola University traces its origin back to the Bible Institute of Los Angeles which was founded by two men, Lyman Stewart, founder and president of the Union Oil Company, and the Reverend T.C. Horton. A member of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, Biola University was ranked as a first-tier national university by the U.S. News & World Report – one of only two schools within the Council to hold this distinction. The University has also been named one of the “Best Western Colleges” by The Princeton Review as well as one of the nation’s “Safest College Campus” and one of the nation’s “Most Drug-Free Campuses”.

Academic Programs

Biola University’s mission is to offer a “biblically centered education, scholarship and service — equipping men and women in mind and character to impact the world for the Lord Jesus Christ.” The University’s vision is to be “identified among the world’s foremost Christ-centered universities — a community abiding in truth, abounding with grace and compelled by Christ’s love to be a relevant and redemptive voice in a changing world.” Biola University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has been so since 1961.

Biola University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through its several colleges and schools. These include the Talbot School of Theology, the Crowell School of Business, the School of Education, the Rosemead School of Psychology, the Cook School of Intercultural Studies, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Science, Technology and Health. All undergraduate students are required to complete a minimum of 30 credited of Bible and theology classes (the equivalent to a minor) in order that students might be prepared to “think biblically about everything.”

Student Life

Biola University has a total enrollment figure of more than 6,000, including well over 4,000 undergraduate students. Strongly committed to diversity, ever since its founding, Biola University has purposed to offer “equal access to Christian higher education for all people, without reference to race, color or class.” The University’s Department of Multi-Ethnic Programs strives to provide fellowship, service and support for students of Color and emphasizes holistic personal development.

Biola University offers a number of on-campus student housing options including several residence halls and student apartments. A variety of dining options and locations also provide students with even more choices and flexibility. Biola University recognizes a number of student-run clubs and organizations which cater to a wide range of personal and academic interests. These and other campus events and activities provide students with ample opportunity to interact with one another outside of the classroom setting and allow them to develop valuable leadership skills. A member of the NAIA Division I, Biola University’s intercollegiate teams compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
