Augsburg University is a private, 4-year school located in the heart of Minneapolis, MN. Founded in 1869 in Marshall, WI and named for the Augsburg (Lutheran) Confession of 1530, the school was moved to Minneapolis in 1872, close to the Mississippi River. The school maintains its relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Set on 24 metropolitan acres, the campus’ buildings feature a blend of traditional and Modern architecture; Old Main, the oldest building on campus, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus also contains Murphy Square Park, an oversized city block-sized green space adjacent to the football field. Among the notable alumni is MMA athlete Nathan Johnson.

Academic Programs

Augsburg University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees and Doctorates in over 50 programs. The college is comprised of over 25 departments; while recognized for Nursing, Teacher Education and Music, the largest program on campus is in Business. The college also features the ‘Augsburg Experience Requirement’ whereby each student participates in one “high-impact external learning experience” ranging from Study Abroad to Internships or other civic engagement experiences. Per the Mission Statement, “Augsburg University educates students to be informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers, and responsible leaders. The Augsburg experience is supported by an engaged community that is committed to intentional diversity in its life and work. An Augsburg education is defined by excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies, guided by the faith and values of the Lutheran church, and shaped by its urban and global settings.”

Student Life

There are over 2600 undergraduate students enrolled in Augsburg University, most of whom live on campus in one five residence halls featuring suites and apartment-style accommodations. The school sponsors over 50 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and gray Auggies, whose mascot is an Eagle, field teams in 12 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Augsburg University has created a Vision for the school’s future, contained in three “Dimensions:” Dimension 1 – Educating for lives of purpose—across the disciplines, beyond the classroom, and around the world; Dimension 2 – At the table with our neighbors and institutional partners, shaping education to address the world’s needs; Dimension 3 – Built for the future—a vital and sustainable institution. These areas of focus, in conjunction with the college’s Values, contribute to the academic and general environment of the school. The college’s stated values include the following three statements: “1.We will create and sustain a culture of innovation and excellence. 2.We will help all of our students to succeed. 3.We will tell Augsburg’s story in word and deed.”
