African American Network - Carolinas Scholarship Fund

The African American Network – Carolinas Scholarship Fund is intended to provide education opportunity for black students in North and South Carolina who are pursuing a STEM or accounting degree. The scholarship fund is somewhat unusual in that the AAN does not directly give out the scholarship. Instead the organization chooses two colleges or universities and one community organization. These organizations then choose the recipient.

The AAN-Carolinas Scholarship Fund was started by the Advocates for African-Americans, a group made up of employees of Duke Energy in 1996. The group exists to foster diversity in industry, providing black young people with the chance to take on leadership positions.

ANSWER Endowment Scholarship

The ANSWER Scholarship puts its mission front and center: “Sending Moms to College.” The mission of the ANSWER Scholarship is to provide working mothers throughout the Charlotte metropolitan area with funds to go to college. To qualify, students must be over 25 years old and enrolled in a Charlotte-area college or university and be the primary guardian for a school-aged child. In addition to the scholarship, recipients are partnered with a mentor to help encourage them through their degree.

The ANSWER Scholarship is built on an important principle – that mothers who succeed have children who succeed. That’s why the ANSWER Scholarship provides opportunities for driven but disadvantaged single mothers who need a leg up. The ANSWER Scholarship has shown an 80% graduation rate – more than twice the national average for nontraditional aged students.

Everett and Trudy Suddreth Scholarship of Excellence Award

The Everett and Trudy Suddreth Scholarship of Excellence Award is presented annually by the Carolinas Food Industry Council to as many as 40 recipients through North and South Carolina. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be an employee or the family member of an employee at one of the CFIC member companies – a number that includes more than 2500 grocers and suppliers throughout the Carolinas.

The CFIC is the predominant organization for the retail food industry in the Carolinas. Dating back to 1902 and the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association, the CFIC is dedicated to helping its members succeed through education, advocacy, and public relations.

The Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship provides educational opportunity for women throughout the South, from Florida to the Carolinas and Virginia.
