Wheeling Jesuit University is a private, 4-year Roman Catholic school located in Wheeling, WV. The school was founded in 1954 by a partnership between the Maryland Society of Jesus and the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston as Wheeling College. In 1987 the school was renamed Wheeling Jesuit College; it reached University status in 1996. The University is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The 65 acre campus features traditional collegiate red brick architecture with several open areas and green spaces. The campus sits just 3 miles from downtown Wheeling and the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Academic Programs

Wheeling Jesuit University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in nearly 50 programs. Noted for Nursing, Physical Therapy and Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Health Professions. Per the Mission Statement, “The Jesuit traditions of educational excellence and service to others guide all the programs at Wheeling Jesuit University. By integrating learning, research and economic development with classical knowledge and Christian revelation, the University seeks to foster competence, creativity and innovation throughout and beyond the campus community… To model the Jesuit concern for regional and global neighbors, the University welcomes people of all creeds, races and nationalities to share in the intelligent pursuit of excellence. The University promotes close student-faculty contacts and encourages students to develop their full potential for leadership. Through a grounding in the liberal arts and, above all, example of Jesus Christ, the University endeavors to produce intelligent, moral leaders who will champion the Jesuit values of faith, peace and justice.”

Student Life

There are over 1,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Wheeling Jesuit University, most of whom live on campus among the 7 residence halls and apartments. The University sponsors over two dozen clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red, black and gold Cardinals, led by Iggy the Cardinal, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. The International Student club sponsors an annual festival celebrating the cultural diversity of WJU; “Last Blast” is held at the end of every school year, including a concert, a formal dance, a carnival and a raft race down Wheeling Creek.
