Wells College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located in Aurora, New York. Established in 1868 originally as a women’s college, the school was started by Henry Wells who also founded the Wells Fargo and American Express Companies; it was not until 2005 that the college became co-educational. Nationally recognized and ranked among the top colleges and universities by Forbes, Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report, Wells College offers students an “academically rigorous and relationship-based education experience.” Wells College’s mission is “to educate students to think critically, reason wisely, and act humanely as they cultivate meaningful lives.”

Academic Programs

Wells College is accredited through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1921. The school awards baccalaureate degrees with major programs in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Biological and Chemical Sciences; Biology; Business; Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics and Management; Education: Inclusive Childhood; English; Environmental Science; Film and Media Studies; History; International Studies; Mathematics; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology and Anthropology; Spanish; Theatre and Dance; Visual Arts; and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Wells College offers a unique hands-on educational approach with classroom learning that is directly connected to future careers within a global society. Each class is taught seminary-style by professors -rather than teaching assistants – more than 80% of whom hold doctoral degrees. In addition, Wells College offers its students several unique and diverse opportunities including faculty-led research, internships, and study abroad in various locations across the United States and around the globe.

Student Life

Wells College boasts a total student population of nearly 600 with representatives from all over the country and the globe. Roughly 3% of Wells College’s students are international and approximately 25% of students identify as persons of color. Located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region on a 300 acre campus overlooking the scenic Cayuga Lake in central New York, Wells College offers students the safety and simplicity of village living with easy access to several major metropolitan and educational areas. Just thirty minutes outside of Ithaca (home to Cornell University), Wells College is just an hour outside of both Rochester and Syracuse and five hours away from New York City.

Wells College is a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference and competes at the NCAA Division III level. In addition to several intramural and club sports, Wells College boasts a number of varsity teams including women’s field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, basketball, cross country, volleyball and men’s basketball, cross country, swimming, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and volleyball.
