Warner Pacific University is a small, private Christian institution known for its educational excellence and its diversity. Founded in 1937, WPU was first a bible college in Spokane, WA, but moved to Portland, OR in 1940, where it became a key urban institution in the growing city. Warner Pacific is the only college in the West affiliated with the Church of God, and has developed a sterling reputation throughout the region for combining educational quality with a Christian faith and worldview. Warner Pacific has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top 10 Western regional colleges in its class, and is also highly ranked for its affordability and diversity.

Academic Programs

Warner Pacific is known for bringing together. As a traditional liberal arts college, and a Christ-centered, biblical Christian college, Warner Pacific’s curriculum emphasizes combining the critical analysis and theoretical grounding of the liberal arts with the traditional faith-based morals and values of Christianity. Faith is integrated throughout the curriculum, as the humanities curriculum is designed around “Big Questions” of belief, responsibility, and ethics, and students must complete a capstone project built around a thorny ethical or moral problem – a “paradox within the human condition.”

However, in addition to traditional liberal arts instruction, WPU is also dedicated to career and adult learning; in fact, today the adult education program numbers more students than the traditional undergraduate. The adult degree program includes both on-campus and highly acclaimed online degrees, accelerated degree plans, and a small cohort format that allows students to work through the program together, building community and support. Warner Pacific’s online programs have won places on numerous rankings of the best online and best Christian schools.

Student Life

As an urban, Church of God institution (one of the most diverse Christian denominations in the US), Warner Pacific is well-known for its openness and tolerance. More than two dozen religious denominations are represented, and the student body is more than half members of minority groups. Warner Pacific has a high transfer rate (nearly half of students come from another institution), and its large adult program makes for a wide range of ages and backgrounds among the student body. These statistics are the result of a concerted and concentrated effort to address inequality in higher education, and have garnered national attention to Warner Pacific University.

Student life at Warner Pacific is deeply engaged with spirituality and service. Chapel attendance and participation in community service are required for all traditional undergraduates; students are even penalized for failing to meet service commitments. Besides public engagements, students take part in numerous clubs and organizations. Despite its small size, Warner Pacific fields more than a dozen men’s and women’s varsity teams, and around 40% of WPU students take part in some sport as players.
