University of Mount Union is a private, four-year, coeducational institution grounded in the liberal arts tradition and located in Alliance, Ohio. Established in 1846 by Orville Nelson Hartshorn, the school’s original mission was to be a “place where men and women could be educated with equal opportunity, science would parallel humanities and there would be no distinction due to race, color or sex.” In the early 1910s Mount Union merged with Scio College, causing the institution to expand even further and in 2010 the school achieved its university status and adopted its current name. The University of Mount Union is affiliated with the East Ohio, West Ohio and Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Academic Programs

The mission of the University of Mount Union is to “prepare students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work and responsible citizenship.” The University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1913. The school offers classes over three semesters – Fall, Spring, and Summer- and the vast majority of its faculty members have earned their doctorate or terminal degrees.

The University of Mount Union also offers graduate level degree programs, including a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Program.

Student Life

The University of Mount Union has a total enrollment figure of over 2,000 students, the majority of whom are undergraduates. The student body’s male to female ratio is split nearly in half with representatives coming from nearly 30 states in the Union as well as over a dozen foreign nations. The University offers a number of student housing options including traditional, suite, and apartment style residencies. Located on a 123 acre campus in Alliance, Ohio, an area of that offers a secure, small-town feel, the University of Mount Union is less than one hour away from Canton, Akron, and Youngstown, and about 70 minutes outside of Cleveland and Pittsburg. In addition to its main campus, the University also operates a 162 acre Nature Center.

The University of Mount Union recognizes at least 80 campus organizations and special events including the Student Senate; multicultural organizations; intramural sports; student media; Greek life; professional organizations; service honoraries and organizations; academic honoraries; social organizations and campus events; performance groups; religious life organizations; political organizations; special interest groups; and more. As an NCAA Division III school, the University of Mount Union sponsors more than 20 intercollegiate athletic teams which compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
