Wyoming looms large in the American imagination – it is large, for one, one of the largest by sheer land mass, but it is also symbolically large, a sign of America’s frontier dreams and Western expansion. It is home to two of the nation’s most-loved and most majestic national parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and nearly half of the state is federally-owned wilderness, making it one of the last wild places in a 21st century that seems overwhelmingly overdeveloped and tamed.

Wyoming also has the smallest population, and the second least-dense (after Alaska), making higher education a unique challenge in the state. The University of Wyoming does the most of the heavy lifting, both at its historic Laramie campus and online, while a system of community colleges meets the more immediate educational needs of Wyoming’s people where they are.

Wyoming’s higher education system is doing the same, investing in technology, health sciences, and other professional programs to nurture a home-grown crop of innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders.
