Hampden-Sydney College is a private, liberal arts college for men located in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. The tenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States (and the last college founded prior to the American Revolution), Hampden-Sydney College has been in continuous operation since 1775 – both James Madison and Patrick Henry served among the first Trustees of the school. Hampden-Sydney College holds the oldest private charter in the South and is the oldest of the country’s few remaining colleges for men. Hampden-Sydney College has been named as one of the best private colleges in America by Forbes Magazine, US News & World Report, and The Princeton Review.

Academic Programs

Hampden-Sydney College is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1919. One of the main characteristics of Hampden-Sydney College is its commitment to honor. Honor is seen as a way of life at Hampden-Sydney College and inspires nearly everything done at the college. Two basic statements, which have been kept for over two centuries, summarize what honorable behavior means to Hampden-Sydney College: “The Hampton-Sydney student will behave as a gentlemen at all times and in all places,” and “The Hampton-Sydney student will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do.” These principles serve as a guide the College’s student-run justice system which aids in creating a safe and dignified community of learners.

Hampden-Sydney College offers more than 25 major programs which culminate in either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Majors include Biology, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Economics & Business, English, Fine Arts, Government & Foreign Affairs, History, Mathematics & Computer Science, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Physics & Astronomy, Psychology, and Religion. In addition, several professional and pre-professional programs are offered, including Army ROTC, Marine Science, Rhetoric, Core Cultures Program, Pre-Business, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Law, and Pre-Medicine.

Student Life

Over 1,000 students are enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College. Located in Virginia’s historic Southside, Hampden-Sydney College is located 70 miles southwest of Richmond, Virginia’s capital. A portion of the University’s 1,300 acre campus is designated as a National Historic Preservation Zone. Hampden-Sydney College’s campus is ideal for outdoorsmen with its easy access to forests, fields, and streams. Through Hampden-Sydney College’s Outdoor Experience, students enjoy outdoor events including hunting, fishing, trap shooting, biking, camping and more. The Prince Edward County where the University is located also offers plenty of opportunities for exploring the area’s rich history and culture.

Student housing is offered in either traditional double-occupancy rooms, or in suite-style apartments or college-owned cottages and houses, which are better suited for a more independent lifestyle. More than 70 student-led clubs and organizations exist on campus, catering to a wide range of interests and passions. Hampden-Sydney College’s varsity teams compete at the NCAA Division III level and the athletic department is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
