Wittenberg University is a private, 4-year college located in Springfield, OH, between Dayton and Columbus. The school was founded in 1845 by the Lutheran Synod in Ohio and taught classes in English in an effort to “Americanize” Lutherans (unlike nearby Capital University which taught in German). The school takes its name from the German town where Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation. Wittenberg started admitting women in 1874 and was racially integrated in 1875. The 100+ acre campus features historical buildings in collegiate gothic revival style of architecture; the campus is adjacent to the Ferncliff Cemetery and Arboretum and has many trees and park-like areas.

Academic Programs

Wittenberg University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees in over 70 majors. Noted for Music and Teacher Education programs, the largest programs on campus are in Social Sciences and Business. Presently, there are only a limited number of online programs available, although the school also boasts a robust internship program and more than 40 study abroad programs, spending a semester, a year or a summer overseas. Per the Mission Statement, “Wittenberg University provides a liberal arts education dedicated to intellectual inquiry and wholeness of person within a diverse residential community. Reflecting its Lutheran heritage, Wittenberg challenges students to become responsible global citizens, to discover their callings, and to lead personal, professional, and civic lives of creativity, service, compassion, and integrity.” The University’s Vision plan “challenges us to be more intentional in defining the learning outcomes of a Wittenberg education by developing a comprehensive four-year educational model.”

Student Life

There are over 1,800 undergraduate students enrolled in Wittenberg University, most of whom live on campus among the seven residence halls and local rental properties (for upperclassmen). The University sponsors about 100 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red and white Tigers field teams in 12 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Students are trained under the school’s Core Values: Liberal Arts – education in the core disciplines of the arts and sciences and in pre-professional education grounded in the liberal arts; Intellectual Inquiry – bringing an enduring passion for learning; Wholeness of Person – develop intellectual capabilities, aesthetic sense, physical well-being, spiritual identity, and social relationships; Community of Learners – A purposeful and intentionally diverse community; Lutheran Heritage – continuing relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; Global Citizenship – seeking common solutions to problems facing our world; Calling – discern vocations and understand the connection between self-fulfillment and service to the world; Creativity – explore new areas of knowledge; Service – give back to the world; Compassion – educate the mind to understand and we educate the heart to care; and Integrity – the highest ethical standards.
