Founded in 1968, Wilmington University is a private research institution that has quickly become one of the largest and most successful in the state of Delaware. From its origin as a small local college in New Castle, DE, Wilmington University grew by leaps and bounds under the leadership of Dr. Audrey Doberstein, whose success in growing the university over almost 30 years won her induction into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women. Today, Wilmington University is a major non-profit institution known for its research and education; in recent years, Wilmington’s growing online presence has earned it a whole new reputation for outreach and excellence.

Academic Programs

A great deal of Wilmington University’s success has been due to its undergraduate and graduate degree programs, which are focused on career preparation with the most current professional knowledge and expertise. All of WU’s faculty members are experienced practitioners in their field, and the curriculum is designed around practical, experiential and realistic projects and collaboration. The name of the game is marketability, and Wilmington University provides students with competitive, job-market-ready degree programs.

An open-access institution, Wilmington University gives all willing students the opportunity to prove themselves, and the flexibility, convenience, and support to achieve success. That includes scheduling of courses along 15-week, 7-week, and weekend formats, as well as multiple locations throughout Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey for adult learners. Generous transfer credits and affordable tuition help working adults complete their degrees more easily, and a growing slate of fully online degree programs means students need not attend classes on campus at all for many degrees.

Student Life

Wilmington University is an example of the university of the present and future, in that it is not bound to the traditional undergraduate campus; only a quarter of WU’s undergraduates are full-time students, and more than 40% of the 20,000 member student body attends exclusively online. As such, WU has no on-campus residences. Nevertheless, Wilmington still maintains more than three dozen student organizations and clubs to build community, entertain, and foster friendships, including honor societies and interest groups like Yoga, Dance, and Digital Filmmaking. All students, traditional and non-traditional, are welcome at campus events, and there is no shortage of activities to keep students engaged.

The Wilmington University Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division II, where 13 teams have achieved dominance in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Wilmington’s baseball and golf teams have both won regional championships, while the award-winning coed cheerleading team have become multiple award-winners. The Wilmington University Athletic Complex in nearby Bear, DE, is a first-rate, state of the art sports facility opened in 2013, a testament to the bright future of WU athletics.
