William Carey University is a private, 4-year school located in Hattiesburg, MS. The school was founded in 1892 as Pearl River Boarding School; it was renamed South Mississippi College and relocated to Hattiesburg in 1906 after a fire destroyed the original school. It closed in 1911 due to another fire, and re-opened s Mississippi Women’s College. The school went co-ed in 1954, and was given its present name to honor the 18th century missionary. The 120 acre campus features traditional collegiate red brick architecture and much open space. Besides the main academic quad is the Chain Garden, named in honor of a former mayor’s family. Each year, the University selects a theme verse for the school year. Past choices include Matthew 5:41 for the theme of “Going the Extra Mile” and James 1:22 for “Action, not words.” The 2016-2017 theme is Equipping for every good work with 2 Timothy 3:17.

Academic Programs

William Carey University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 35 majors. Noted for Healthcare, Music and Education, the largest programs on campus are in Healthcare, Business and Education. The University is comprised of seven colleges and schools: Noonkester School of Arts and Letters; School of Business; School of Education; Winters School of Music & Ministry Studies; School of Natural & Behavioral Sciences; College of Health Sciences; College of Osteopathic Medicine (accredited by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation). Per the Mission Statement, “As a Christian university which embraces its Baptist heritage and namesake, William Carey University provides quality educational programs, within a caring Christian academic community, which challenge the individual student to excel in scholarship, leadership, and service in a diverse global society.” The stated Vision of the school: William Carey University is a community of learners which seeks to blend faith and learning with living. Within this unique nurturing and challenging environment students prepare to fulfill their diverse callings in the larger global community.

Student Life

There are over 2400 undergraduate students enrolled in William Carey University. The University sponsors clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red, black and white Crusaders field teams in 7 sports and participate in NAIA Division I competition.
