Western Michigan University is a public research university located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Established in 1903, Western Michigan University is classified as one of the nation’s research universities by the Carnegie Foundation and has been designated as one of the country’s best national universities by the U.S. News & World Report for more than two dozen consecutive years. Western Michigan University’s Main campus is located in Kalamazoo, just west of downtown. This Main campus serves as home base for the majority of the University’s academic programs, campus services, residence halls, and other facilities and consists of three adjoining campuses: the East, Oakland Drive, and West campuses. In addition to its main campus, Western Michigan University also operates Aviation facilities at the W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek as well as the Parkview Campus, located in Kalamazoo about three miles south of the main campus.

Academic Programs

Western Michigan University awards a variety of academic programs through its several colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Aviation, the Haworth College of Business, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the Graduate College, the College of Health and Human Services, and the Lee Honors College. In addition to its extensive undergraduate offerings, Western Michigan University offers several nationally and internationally recognized graduate programs in a wide range of areas, including creative writing, counseling psychology, engineering management, evaluation, medieval studies, and speech pathology. Western Michigan University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1915.

Western Michigan University is “committed to promoting success for learners at every level.” In addition to its main academic programs, Western Michigan University also offers a number or experiential learning opportunities including almost 100 study abroad programs in forty countries as well as access to countless more through its linkage with other organizations and universities around the globe.

Student Life

Western Michigan University has a total enrollment figure of nearly 24,000, including over 18,500 undergraduate students. Nearly 2,000 of these are international students, hailing from some 100 countries. On-campus housing is provided through approximately two dozen residence halls and special interest housing is available for students who are interested in sharing living space with other students of similar major or interests.

Students at Western Michigan University enjoy a wide range of cultural events as well as over 1,400 plays, concerts and exhibitions staged by the fine arts college. Several student groups, such as the Campus Activities Board sponsors performances by comedians, musicians and other popular entertainers. Some 400 student organizations also provide students with ample opportunity to connect with fellow classmates with extracurricular educational, professional, social, spiritual, and recreational groups. As an NCAA Division I-A school, Western Michigan University’s athletic teams compete in the Mid-America Conference. The University’s varsity sports teams include men’s Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Soccer, and Tennis as well as women’s Basketball, Cross country, Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and field (indoor and outdoor), and Volleyball.
