Washington College is a private, 4-year school located in Chestertown, MD in the Eastern Shores area of the state, along the Chester River which feeds into the Chesapeake Bay. The school was founded in 1782, with the blessing of George Washington who assented to having the “College of Chester” renamed in his honor. Washington College is among the oldest colleges in the country and the first chartered post-Independence. Washington College admitted women as of 1891. The 100+ acre campus features traditional collegiate red brick architecture along with more contemporary buildings. The compact campus still features much green space and close proximity to the Chester River.

Washington College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees in over 40 majors. The largest programs on campus are in Business and Social Sciences. The College also hosts three Signature Centers: the Center for Environment & Society, the C.V. Starr Center for the study of the American Experience and the Rose O’Neill Literary House; Internships and Study Abroad programs are administered by the Institute for Religion, Politics and Culture.
