The University of Wisconsin-Madison (referred to as “UW”, or regionally as “UW-M”) is a public land-grant university and a prolific research institution. Located in Madison, Wisconsin, UW’s main campus is 936-acres and features four National Historic Landmarks. UW offers students a world-class education and has been named the 11th best public university in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Made up of faculty and students who solve real-world problems, UW puts out approximately $1 billion annually in research expenditures. Established in 1848, UW was the first public university to be established in Wisconsin and remains the largest public university in the state.
Academic Programs
Accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, UW is made up of multiple colleges and schools and awards baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees. UW offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and certificates through multiple divisions and schools, including the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Wisconsin School of Business; School of Education; College of Engineering; Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies; School of Human Ecology; College of Letters & Science; School of Medicine and Public Health; School of Nursing; School of Pharmacy; School of Veterinary Medicine; and the Division of Continuing Studies.More than 250 masters, doctoral and professional degree programs are offered through the UW, and the university also offers several programs that are either fully or partially available online. Such programs include an MS in Educational Psychology; MS in Electrical Engineering; MA in Library and Information Studies; Master of Mechanical Engineering; and more. UW places a strong emphasis on service work and students are highly encouraged to volunteer in the community, nationally, and around the world. UW has produced more than 3,000 Peace Corps volunteers since the early 1960’s and approximately 1,500 students volunteer in the community each year.
Student Life
UW has an impressive enrollment figure of over 42,000 students, more than 30,000 of which are undergraduate students. All fifty states and more than 120 foreign nations are represented in UW’s student body and the campus community makes up a diverse, energetic, and active environment. Over 900 student-led organizations exist on campus, allowing students to connect and work together with fellow-classmates who share the same interests, passions, beliefs, or culture. Nearly twenty residence halls, a number of residential learning communities, and multiple university-owned apartment neighborhoods provide accommodation for UW’s students. Faculty, staff, students and the public are welcome to dine at any of the University’s several dining centers and cafes all year.UW is an NCAA Division I-A school and has been named the #1 college football town in America. UW sponsors more than 20 varsity teams which compete in the Big Ten Conference. Nicknamed the Badgers, UW’s most popular athletic teams, other than football, include track, rowing, and swimming and diving.
