In downtown Seattle, WA is the 700 acre campus of the University of Washington, a public 4-year university founded in 1861. Near the scenic Puget Sound, Seattle is home to the NFL franchise Seahawks and major businesses including Amazon and Starbucks. Seattle, named for a local Native American chief “Si’Ahl,” boasts the iconic Space Needle which is a visible landmark from almost anywhere in the city. Seattle is also known for coffee – from the numerous coffee shops (35/1000 people) to the many brands associated with the area. The University of Washington been the backdrop for several movie locations is the school’s notable alumni include Bruce Lee and Kenny G. The center of the campus is a large quad called Red Square and it is the center of much of the activity on campus.

Academic Programs

The 16 schools within the university offer Bachelor’s, Master’s, post-Master’s and Doctorates in over 140 departments. While noted for Social Sciences (including Political Science and Economics) and Biology/Bio-Med fields, the university is recognized by specialized accrediting bodies for nutrition, health (nursing, midwifery and occupational therapy), dental, legal and artistic studies. Additionally, the school offers internships for students in the Dental, Nutrition and Psychology programs. The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Their academic mission statement includes “…the preservation, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge. The University preserves knowledge through its libraries and collections, its courses, and the scholarship of its faculty. It advances new knowledge through many forms of research, inquiry and discussion; and disseminates it through the classroom and the laboratory, scholarly exchanges, creative practice, international education, and public service.” Online availability is growing and currently includes 2 degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Childhood and Family Studies and Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Social Studies.

Student Life

The urban campus provides many options for the 31,000 undergraduate student body. There are 800 registered clubs and organizations, and there is no loss of something to do in the city. The Washington Huskies compete in the NCAA Division 1-A (Pac 12 conference) and field 12 teams on the varsity level. The school is credited for inventing the “Wave” at sporting events in 1981 and is also where bubble gum, vinyl and synthetic rubber were invented.
