Immediately south of Miami, FL is Coral Gables, home to the University of Miami, a private, 4-year institution. Founded in 1925, the University is made up of a 230+ acre main campus in Coral Gables, 60 acre Medical Campus in the city of Miami and locations on Virginia Key (a nearby island off the coast of Miami) and in southwestern Miami (the former Richmond Naval Air Station). The main campus features primarily light colored stonework and contemporary architecture in keeping with the “feel” of the local environment. Also, there are several open spaces and greenways adding to the pleasant atmosphere of the southern Florida grounds. Among many notable alumni are actor/athlete Dwayne Johnson, musicians Bruce Hornsby and Enrique Iglesias and NFL Hall of Fame members Michael Irvin and Jim Otto.

Academic Programs

The University of Miami is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 180 programs. Presently, only certain Masters and Certificate programs are available online. Noted for Teacher Education, Music, Nursing, Healthcare-related fields, the largest programs on campus are in Biology/BioMedical studies and Business. The University is comprised of 11 undergraduate colleges and schools: School of Architecture, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Communication, School of Education and Human Development, College of Engineering, School of Law, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Miller School of Medicine, Frost School of Music, School of Nursing and Health Studies. Per the Mission Statement, “The University of Miami’s mission is to educate and nurture students, to create knowledge, and to provide service to our community and beyond. Committed to excellence and proud of the diversity of our University family, we strive to develop future leaders of our nation and the world.”

Student Life

There are over 11,000 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Miami. Nearly all first-year students live on campus among the wide variety of available housing options, while more than half of upperclassmen live off campus. The University sponsors over 275 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the green, orange and white Hurricanes, led by Sebastian the Ibis, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division I competition. The annual football game between Miami and Florida is played for the War Canoe Trophy, an authentic, hand-carved Seminole Indian canoe which is displayed by the current winner. Throughout their time at “The U,” students learn the Core Values of the school: “We are absolutely committed to freedom of inquiry—the freedom to think, to question, to criticize, and to dissent. We will pursue the value of excellence in our research and educational missions with the single-mindedness that only great commitments deserve.
