Located in Athens, Georgia, the University of Georgia (UGA) is a comprehensive land and sea grant institution. Founded in 1785, UGA holds the distinction of being the first state-chartered university in the nation and the birthplace of the American system of public higher education. Considered to be the flagship university of the State of Georgia, the school’s main campus in Athens is made up of 762 acres and is located just 60 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. UGA has been named #21 overall among public national universities by the U.S. News & World Report and has ranked as high as 101st among all the top international universities.UGA is known to be one of the top producers of U.S. Fulbright students and is one of just seven universities nationwide whose students have been recipients of all three national undergraduate scholarships: the Goldwater, Truman, and Udall.

Academic Programs

The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and awards degrees ranging from baccalaureate to doctoral. The university is made up of nearly twenty colleges and schools, including the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; School of Law; College of Pharmacy; Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources; College of Education; Graduate School; C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business; Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication; College of Family and Consumer Sciences; College of Veterinary Medicine; School of Social Work; College of Environment and Design; School of Public and International Affairs; College of Public Health; Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology; and the College of Engineering. UGA is also home to the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership.

UGA offers over two dozen bachelor degrees in more than 140 fields of study along with 30-plus master’s degrees in over 125 fields, doctoral degrees in nearly 100 areas, and professional degrees in law, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. The UGA library system ranks among the nation’s best, boasting 4.7 million volumes and one of the largest map collections in the United States.

Student Life

Over 35,000 students are enrolled at the University of Georgia, including nearly 27,000 undergraduates. UGA offers comfortable living accommodations to students and students are required to live on-campus during their freshman year. Undergraduate housing is divided into seven communities with graduate students residing in one of three communities. More than 600 registered student organizations offer students abundant opportunity to connect, catering to a variety of interests, passions, backgrounds, and cultures. Greek life also maintains a strong presence on campus with over 30 social fraternities and more than 25 social sororities.

UGA’s athletic department offers more than twenty varsity sports teams that compete at the NCAA Division I-A level. A member of the Southwestern Conference, UGA has won more than 40 national championships since 1999. Nicknamed the Bulldogs, UGA holds a historic rivalry with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Non-varsity sports include wrestling, ultimate Frisbee, men’s soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and ice hockey.
