The University of Dayton, located in Dayton, OH, is a private Roman Catholic 4-year university. Founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary, the university is one of three Marianist universities in the country and Ohio’s largest private university. Set adjacent to the Miami River just south of center city, the 380 acre campus is divided into four sections: Historic Campus, Campus West, River Campus, and Arena Sports Complex. The campus provides a blend of traditional collegiate red brick architecture and contemporary buildings and is known for the Immaculate Conception Chapel; its blue cupola is featured in the school’s logo. Among the many notable alumni of the University of Dayton are humorist Erma Bombeck, editorial cartoonist Chip Bok, former NFL coaches Chuck Knoll and Jon Gruden.

Academic Programs

The University of Dayton is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees ad Doctorates in over 80 fields of study. The University is comprised of five colleges and schools: College of Arts & Sciences, School of Education and Health Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Business Administration and School of Law. Presently, there are a limited number of online programs available in the Master’s programs, but the University has a robust overseas study program featuring over 50 opportunities for foreign study. Also noted for Dietetics, Art & Design, Music and Teacher Education programs, the largest undergraduate programs on campus are in Business and Engineering. Per the Mission Statement, “The University of Dayton is a top-tier Catholic research university with academic offerings from the undergraduate to the doctoral levels. We are a diverse community committed, in the Marianist tradition, to educating the whole person and linking learning and scholarship with leadership and service.”

Student Life

There are over 8500 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Dayton, over 90% of them living on campus in one of the several residence halls, apartments or school-owned houses. There is also a significant Greek presence on campus. The University sponsors many clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red and columbia blue Flyers, led by Rudy Flyer, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition. A favorite calendar tradition is the Feast of Immaculate Conception each December. While at the University, students learn the Core Values of the school: “We are committed to being an educational community that: offers a broad range of undergraduate programs and selected graduate and continuing education programs; views learning and scholarship as a shared task of discovering, integrating, applying and communicating knowledge; and emphasizes learning and scholarship at the intersections of liberal and professional education, of the disciplines, and of theory and practice.” And “We are also dedicated to excellence in creating new knowledge, integrating this knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, and applying it creatively to meet human needs. We are responsive and serve the needs of our community and region.”
