The University of Dallas is a Catholic University in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas. Located in Irving, TX the University of Dallas is a private 4-year school founded in 1956. The 740+ acre campus is in between Dallas and Fort Worth, a major metropolitan area. Irving is home to large financial and telecommunications companies and provides a mid-size city backdrop for the University. The UD Charter was originally granted in 1910, but the first school closed in 1928. In 1955, the Sisters of St Mary of Namur obtained the charter to launch the school to take over the junior college Our Lady of Victory College in Ft Worth. The Dallas Diocese granted permission and the school was started as a co-educational facility that would not be faith-exclusive.

Academic Programs

The University of Dallas is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s degrees and Doctorates through its three undergraduate schools as well as the School of Ministry. No matter what area they pursue, all students are required to complete two years of common study covering philosophy, theology, history, literature, politics, economics, mathematics, science, art, and a foreign language. Then they may choose to enter the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts, the Constantin College of Liberal Arts, the Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business. While UD has been recognized for their Liberal Education program, their largest program is in Business Administration and Management. Per the Mission statement, “The University of Dallas is dedicated to the pursuit of wisdom, of truth, and of virtue as the proper and primary ends of education. The University seeks to educate its students so they may develop the intellectual and moral virtues, prepare themselves for life and work in a problematic and changing world, and become leaders able to act responsibly for their own good and for the good of their family, community, country, and church.”

Student Life

In addition to all the activity in the local area, UD’s 2,500 students have 50 clubs to select from as well as 8 sports teams for the athletes. The University of Dallas navy and white Crusaders participate in NCAA Division III competitions; and Intramural teams are available for the non-varsity crowd. The University has 6 single-gender residence halls – all new students are required to live on campus – and there is another upper class residence hall as well as available apartments. While at school, students become familiar with the Core Values of UD: a commitment to the study and development of the western tradition of liberal education, and the Catholic intellectual tradition; an understanding of human nature in that it is spiritual and physical, rational and free; the school is open to faculty and students of all faiths, and it supports their academic and religious freedom without discrimination; maintenance of the dialogue of faith and reason, while assuring the proper autonomy of each of the arts, sciences, and professions; and that The University of Dallas promotes education that shares a common spirit with the liberal arts: reflecting critically on the ends governing the profession, fostering principled moral judgment, and providing the knowledge and skills requisite for professional excellence.
