University of Central Missouri is a public state institution located in Warrensburg, Missouri. Established in 1871, the University was known early on as the Warrensburg Teachers College; later the name was changed to Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 and again to Central Missouri State College in 1945. In 1972 the name was changed yet again to Central Missouri State University and in 1965 the University’s graduate school was established. It was not until 2006 the school’s final name, the University of Central Missouri, was adopted. The University’s main campus features 1,560-plus acres and is located just fifty miles southeast of Kansas City in the town of Warrensburg, an area with a population of approximately 19,000 residents.
Academic Programs
The mission of University of Central Missouri is to transform “students into lifelong learners, dedicated to service, with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed and lead in the region, state, nation and world.” The University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1915.At least 150 programs of study are offered by University of Central Missouri, and lead to either a certificate, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, education specialist degree, or a cooperative doctorate degree. Among these programs are included nearly a dozen pre-professional programs, more than 25 areas of teacher certification, and well over 30 graduate programs. Through the University of Central Missouri’s International Center, students are able to study in almost every country in the world with study abroad programs offered in more than 60 countries. In addition to the program offerings available at University of Central Missouri’s main campus, several programs and classes are also offered at UCM Lee’s Summit as well as through UCM Online.
Student Life
University of Central Missouri has a total enrollment figure of well over 14,000, including more than 10,000 undergraduate students. Representatives from nearly all 50 states and more than 60 countries make up the student body, though more than 85% of students are Missouri residents. Student housing is offered through more than a dozen residence halls, each of which are no more than a six minute walk away from the University’s classroom buildings and recreational facilities. Each room in the University’s residence halls have a fiber-optic Internet link, cable TV hookup capabilities, and local telephone service – parking also comes with each room. Options for suites, special-interest housing programs and university apartments are also available.University of Central Missouri recognizes more than 200 active clubs and student organizations as well as over 60 intramural and club sports and nearly two dozen Greek organizations. As an NCAA Division II school, University of Central Missouri fields more than 15 varsity teams, nicknamed “Mules and Jennies”, and is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
