The University of Arkansas is a public, coeducational land-grant institution and the flagship of the University of Arkansas System. Established in 1871, the University of Arkansas is located in Fayetteville, Arkansas on a scenic campus in the hilly northwest corner of the state. The University boasts two arboreta which overlook the Ozark Mountains and the campus is located near some of the best outdoor amenities and hiking trails in the country. Considered one of the best college towns in the nation, the surrounding region of Northwest Arkansas has been repeatedly ranked as one of the best places to live. Following a “students-first” philosophy, the University consistently ranks among the nation’s top public research universities and is classified as having “the highest possible levels of research” by the Carnegie Foundation, placing the University of Arkansas in the top 2% of universities nationwide.
Academic Programs
The mission of the University of Arkansas is to “provide an internationally competitive education for undergraduate and graduate students in a wide spectrum of disciplines; contribute new knowledge, economic development, basic and applied research and creative activity; and provide service to academic/professional disciplines and society, all aimed at fulfilling its public land-grant mission to serve Arkansas and beyond as a partner, resource, and catalyst.” The University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1924The University of Arkansas offers more than 210 academic programs. Comprised of several colleges and schools, these include the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences; the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design; the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences; the Sam M. Walton College of Business; the College of Education and Health Professions; the College of Engineering; the Honors College; Graduate School and International Education; the School of Law; and the Global Campus which supports the development and delivery of the University’s online, distance and professional education offerings.
Student Life
The University of Arkansas has a total enrollment figure of nearly 27,000, including more than 22,000 undergraduate programs. Representatives from all fifty states in the Union as well as from more than 120 countries make up the University’s diverse student body. Several housing opportunities are available including Living and Learning Communities which allow students who share a particular interest or have the same major to experience campus life together.Students at the University of Arkansas have opportunity to join more than 380 student organizations, participate in Student Government, and to become members of more than 30 Greek letter fraternities and sororities. Students attend lectures from some of the biggest names in the world – the Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall, Anderson Cooper, and President George H.W. Bush have all been guest speakers; enjoy free concerts hosted by the Headliner Concerts Committee; and participate in other campus entertainments including comedy shows, late-night programs, outdoor feature films, art openings and live theatre. As an NCAA Division I-A school, the University of Arkansas fields several varsity athletic teams which compete in the Southeastern Conference.
