The University at Buffalo – The State University of New York (often abbreviated UB) is a premier, research-intensive public university based out of Buffalo, New York. Established in 1846, UV serves as the flagship institution in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is the largest and most comprehensive campus within the 64-campus SUNY system. A member of the Association of American Universities, UB is noteworthy for many reasons, not the least of which is its dedication and contributions to scientific research. The University spends more than $380 million annually on research and boasts faculty inventors who have contributed to a number of inventions including the implantable battery-operated cardiac pacemaker, photodynamic cancer therapy, pattern recognition software and much more.

Academic Programs

The University at Buffalo is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1921. UB is comprised of several colleges and schools, namely the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Dental Medicine, the Graduate School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Law School, the School of Management, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Public Health and Health Professions, the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Graduate Division, and the School of Social Work.

More than 110 undergraduate degrees (including combined degrees) are offered by the University at Buffalo, along with well over 300 graduate, professional and certificate programs. UB has also, for more than ten years, been among the top 20 institutions in the nation which enroll the largest number of international students. UB partners with more than 80 leading universities from all over the globe, and sends out annually more than 600 students to study abroad.

Student Life

The University at Buffalo has a total enrollment figure of nearly 30,000, including approximately 20,000 undergraduate students. On-campus student housing is available through more than a dozen residence halls as well as in several campus apartment communities. Residential dining centers, food courts and snack spots provide meals for students which “suite every taste.”

The University at Buffalo recognizes a variety of student-led clubs and organizations which cater to a wide range of personal and professional interests and provide wonderful opportunity for students to interact with one another and develop valuable leadership qualities and skills. Concerts, world-renowned speakers, performances and other events are held regularly on campus for students’ benefit as well. Students also enjoy participating in a variety of intramural programs and Life and Learning Workshops which encourage students in healthy living. As an NCAA Division I-A school, UB fields a number of varsity athletic teams which compete in the Mid-American Conference.
