40 miles east of Montgomery, AL is Tuskegee Alabama, home to the large Tuskegee Forest and one of the nation’s Historically Black Universities (HBCU) – Tuskegee University. Situated on 5,200 acres of rural Alabama ground, the school’s rich and vibrant history is seen nearly everywhere. Founded in 1881 by Booker T Washington, this private 4-year school became well known for the pilots and other airmen who trained for duty there during World War II. The famed Tuskegee Airmen flew into history as ready, willing and able servicemen who defended their country without reservation. The small town setting provides poetic background for the history of the grounds. Tuskegee alumni have been successful in many walks of life and include Lionel Ritchie, Betty Shabazz as well as many activities, politicians and artists.

Academic Programs

Tuskegee University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers 40 Bachelor’s Degrees, 17 Masters Degree and 4 Doctorates in 5 colleges and 2 schools. The school has also earned specific accreditation for their Dietetics, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Teacher Education programs. Among the multiple degree programs, Business and Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical and Electrical) are the largest programs in the school. Currently, the only online programs available are for graduate programs. Tuskegee University’s Mission statement says the school “accomplishes its central purpose of developing leadership, knowledge and service through its undergraduate, graduate, professional, research and outreach programs. Through these programs, students are encouraged not only to pursue careers but to be of service to society and to remain active lifetime learners. The University seeks to instill a robust thirst for knowledge and a vibrant quest for wholesale patterns of personal and social ethics that have philosophical and spiritual depth. In the process, it seeks to help each student develop an appreciation for the finer traits of human personality, the beauty of the earth and the universe, and a personal commitment to the improvement of the human condition.”

Student Life

Many of the 3,100 enrolled students (2,500 undergrad) occupy the 13 gender-specific residence halls; there are also 4 apartment buildings available. The Golden Tigers (crimson and gold) participate in 6 sports as part of the NCAA Division II league. Intramurals are readily available as are several on-campus clubs based on affinity, interest or interests. Tuskegee imparts its core values to the students – “INSTRUCTION: We focus on education as a continuing process and lifelong endeavor for all people. We provide a high quality core experience in the liberal arts. We develop superior technical, scientific, and professional education with a career orientation. We stress the relationship between education and employment, between what students learn and the changing needs of a global workforce. RESEARCH: We preserve, refine, and develop further the bodies of knowledge already discovered. We discover new knowledge for the continued growth of individuals and society and for the enrichment of the University’s instructional and service programs. We develop applications of knowledge to help resolve problems of modern society. SERVICE: We serve the global society as well as the regional and campus community and beyond through the development of outreach programs that are compatible with the University’s educational mission, that improve understanding of community problems, and that help develop relevant alternative solutions. We engage in outreach activities to assist in the development of communities as learning societies.”
