Located 90 miles northwest of Houston in the town of College Station, TX, Texas A&M University is a public research university. Though the university was originally established as a men’s university in 1876, the school has been coeducational since the 1960’s. Many of the students at Texas A&M, known as Aggies, boldly participate in the school’s rich traditions. Indeed, spend a few minutes on the campus and you will quickly learn about the significance of traditions like “The Spirit of Aggieland” and the 12th Man.
Academic Programs
While Texas A&M has been known to be a top engineering and agricultural university for decades, the school offers much more than the name implies. The university has a robust offering of 130 undergraduate degree programs, 170 master’s degree programs, 93 doctoral degree programs and 5 first professional degrees.These degree programs are offered out of over a dozen departments and colleges: Medicine, Nursing, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Architecture. Note that many of the departments, schools, and colleges offer fully online programs ensuring a premium education with maximum flexibility. For example, the College of Education and Human Development offers online degrees such as an MS in Sport Management and an online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction. Furthermore, the School of Counseling has a 100% online masters program in School Counseling. These are just a few of the many distance education option for those who would like to attend Texas A&M but need to attend classes remotely. Regional accreditation is provided by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
Student Life
Nearly 60,000 students call Texas A&M’s College Station campus home. The Department of Residence Life Houses around 7,500 students each year in a wide variety of living options. The school has over 1000 clubs centered around interests such as academics, service, agriculture, languages, arts, culture, activism, faith, sports, and more. Furthermore, A&M also has close to 60 Greek organizations involving more than 10% of undergraduate students.One major aspect of student life at A&M is the Corp of Cadets. When A&M was founded in 1876, every student had to become a member of the military preparation body. Today the Corps is voluntary but remains the largest uniformed body outside the national service academies.
A&M has around 20 athletic teams that compete in the Southeast Conference. One of the most widely known traditions at Texas A&M is the 12th Man. At every home football game, the student section remains standing for the entirety of the game. The students are the metaphorical 12th Man, ready to play if one of the 11 on the field get hurt. Students who wish to play sports on a recreational level can enroll in one of the many intramural sport options.
