Part of the State University of New York system, one of the nation’s most renowned higher education systems, SUNY College of Geneseo is one of the northeast region’s most respected public institutions. Founded in 1871 as a teacher’s college and technical training school, Geneseo has been a public liberal arts college since 1948. Today, with a mid-sized student body of 5600 and a reputation for excellence, Geneseo is regularly ranked as one of the top regional colleges in the North by U.S. News & World Report. Further, Geneseo is a perennial best value in rankings by Kiplinger’s, Forbes, and the Princeton Review, for combining the affordability of a public college with the highest level of excellence and opportunity.

Academic Programs

As a liberal arts college, SUNY Geneseo’s mission puts traditional humanistic values at the foundation of its curriculum: Learning, Creativity, Inclusivity, Responsibility, and Sustainability, according to the official Mission and Vision. Excellent classroom practice has given Geneseo a reputation as a top teaching institution, but undergraduate research is also deeply integrated into the curriculum, including opportunities to work alongside faculty to develop research, co-write publications, and present at professional and academic conferences.

Geneseo’s greatest strengths are in the areas most associated with the liberal arts, with the most popular majors including education, business, social sciences, and biology. In addition, the American Institute of Physics recognizes Geneseo as one of the top producers of physics graduates, while Geneseo is a national leader in sending graduates on to STEM PhD programs. With their emphasis on student support and engagement, Geneseo has earned the highest four-year graduate rate in the nation, as well as one of the best student retention rates – students come, stay, and graduate on time at Geneseo, going on to success.

Student Life

SUNY Geneseo is part of the village of Geneseo, one of the few communities in the US to be placed, as a whole, on the National Historic Landmark registry. With its location in New York’s Finger Lakes region, Geneseo lives in a region of great historical importance, including the Second Great Awakening, the birthplace of Mormonism, a hub of the Underground Railroad, and the founding of the Women’s Suffrage Movement at Seneca Falls. That spirit of passion and progressivism continues today in Geneseo’s commitment to community service and leadership, including the Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development.

Geneseo also celebrates diversity and culture among its 5600 students, including the nationally-recognized Geneseo Hip-Hop Symposium, a yearly series of lectures, performances, and events. Geneseo students also benefit from a highly developed career development system, internships, study abroad opportunities (some 40% of Geneseo’s students take part), and a significant alumni network for post-graduation job placement.
