25 miles away from Daytona, across the Tiger Bay State Forest is DeLand, FL which is home to Stetson University. Stetson University, founded in 1883 as DeLand Academy (renamed DeLand University 4 years later), the school was renamed again to Stetson University in honor of a founding benefactor, John B. Stetson (of cowboy hat fame). Stetson University sits on 175 acres of suburban real estate along the I-4 corridor (from Daytona to Tampa); the campus has served as a backdrop to several motion pictures including The Waterboy and Walt Before Mickey. DeLand was founded in part due to the high prevalence of persimmon trees; agriculture was the economic base for the town. DeLand was also the first city in Florida to have electricity.

Academic Programs

Stetson University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, post-master’s certificates and doctorates in over 60 majors. The University is comprised of 4 schools: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Music and the College of Law. The school has specific recognition for the Music and Teacher Education programs, however, the Business school has the largest programs (Business Administration/Management and Accounting/Finance). Stetson offers business students the Roland George Investments Program, where business students manage a real portfolio of more than $2.8 million. This fits with the Mission Statement of the university which states the goal “to provide an excellent education in a creative community where learning and values meet, and to foster in students the qualities of mind and heart that will prepare them to reach their full potential as informed citizens of local communities and the world. At Stetson, the art of teaching is practiced through programs solidly grounded in a tradition of liberal learning that stimulates critical thinking, imaginative inquiry, creative expression, and lively intellectual debate.”

Student Life

On campus, Stetson’s student body of over 4,000 has many options for involvement. There are over 120 student clubs and organizations based on affinity groups, interests or culture. Campus housing includes 9 dormitories as well as apartments and Greek houses. Stetson University participates in 12 sports in NCAA Division I-AAA competition, fielding teams called the Hatters in green and white. The Mascot is “John B” in honor of Mr. Stetson himself. For the non-varsity athlete, there are club sports and Intramurals available also. Local traditions include the dunking of a class ring in Holler Fountain and ringing the bell behind Hulley Tower before a test in order to perform better (studying notwithstanding). During their time at Stetson, students are imbued with the school’s core values aimed at the development of the whole person committed to engaging and building lifelong connections with the larger world through Personal Growth, Intellectual Development, and Global Citizenship. The Values statement continues: “To that end, the University fosters policies, practices, and modes of inquiry to support and explore these values areas.” Personal Growth (passion, the drive to increase self-knowledge, and the quest for balance); Intercultural competence (religious and spiritual exploration, self-awareness, and wellness); Intellectual Development (achieve excellence in academics, foster the spirit of exploration, cultivate rigorous methods of academic inquiry, model and support absolute integrity, and to value creativity and professionalism); Global Citizenship (be informed, active, and engaged citizens of both local communities and the world.
