A small liberal arts institution in Canton, NY, St. Lawrence University was founded in 1856 by the Universalist Church (today’s Unitarian-Universalist Church) as a seminary for future ministers in the faith. The Universalist Church was a standard-bearer for progressive Protestantism from its very beginning, and St. Lawrence is the oldest co-educational university in New York, putting gender equality as a tenet of their mission. The St. Lawrence University of today keeps that spirit alive, preparing thoughtful, analytical leaders for a wide range of professions and careers while striving for justice and fairness for all.

Academic Programs

St. Lawrence University remains rooted in the traditional liberal arts, building all of its curriculum, from professional programs to STEM, on the foundation of critical thinking, analysis, and creativity. With 69 majors and 40 minors, St. Lawrence’s most popular programs are in economics, psychology, biology, government, and English. However, St. Lawrence also permits exploration and innovation with multi-disciplinary majors that students can design themselves to develop specializations that don’t already exist. Education and professional programs including business, nursing, and engineering are also strong at St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence stays with the most important tradition of the liberal arts college – excellent faculty. Nearly all of their full-time faculty (98%) hold the highest degree in their field, and an 11:1 student/faculty ratio ensures that students will be able to encounter and work with faculty members directly, developing their research skills under a knowledgeable guide. Almost half of St. Lawrence graduates go on to graduate degree programs within 5 years, and 96% find either employment or acceptance in a master’s program within a year of graduation.

Student Life

Coming from a Unitarian-Universalist heritage, a denomination that places service and progressive values at the forefront of their belief, St. Lawrence’s student life is dominated by community and service-oriented activity. As much at 99% of St. Lawrence’s student body lives on campus, and almost 2500 young people need something to keep them occupied outside of class. More than three-quarters of St. Lawrence’s student participate in community service opportunities, from helping out members of the community to mentoring young people in Canton.

Beyond community service, St. Lawrence offers students a more than 100 student-led clubs and organizations, a tolerant and encouraging atmosphere, and many cultural opportunities. Study abroad is also highly developed, with more than half of all students taking part in one of the 28 programs offered in 20 different countries. The standard of liberal education is openness, experiment, and personal growth, a standard that St. Lawrence continues to set well into their second century.
