Located in beautiful Saratoga Springs, New York on an 890-acre campus, Skidmore College is a private, independent liberal arts institution. Established in 1903 as the Young Women’s Industrial Club, in 1911 the name was changed to Skidmore School of the Arts and finally to Skidmore College eleven years later in 1922. Today, Skidmore is a highly regarded liberal arts college well known for its creative approach to nearly everything. The school boasts an impressive faculty, with members who have earned recognition from the Guggenheim, Pulitzer, and Emmy awards as well as fellowships and grants from Fulbright, MacArthur, and National Science Foundation, among others.
Academic Programs
Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1925, Skidmore College is known for its interdisciplinary approach to learning and its collaborative faculty-student research. Offering a variety of majors in the sciences, social sciences, humanities Skidmore also awards degrees in career specific fields such as business, social work, education, and exercise science. Skidmore offers its own master’s program, a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies plus cooperative bachelor’s and master’s programs with other leading institutions in areas such as business, engineering, nursing, and physical and occupational therapy. In addition, Skidmore also offers dedicated assistance to students who are preparing for medical, dental, veterinary and other health schools through its Health Professions Advisory Committee.Many students choose to carry two majors or add a related minor to their current major. More than half of Skidmore’s students study abroad with over 125 study abroad programs to choose from, including Skidmore programs in London, Paris, Alcala, Madrid. Skidmore’s other academic features include the Skidmore’s Periclean Honors Forum, which sponsors the annual Academic Festival, funded internships, and service-learning courses.
Student Life
With a total enrollment of nearly 3,000 (most of whom are undergraduate students), represented in Skidmore College’s student body are more than 65 foreign countries and at least 45 States. Skidmore’s several residence halls house primarily first-year and sophomore students in single, double, and triple rooms; each hall offers a main lounge area as well as smaller floor lounges, kitchenettes, study rooms, laundry, exercise equipment, and more. Skidmore’s apartment buildings are reserved for upper-class students and are fully furnished with a kitchen, common space, and shared bathroom facilities.Nearly 100 student clubs and organizations exist on campus, ranging from a capella groups, SkidTV, WSPN radio, and a Model European Union, to snowboarding, and academic, cultural awareness, and religious groups. Nearby downtown Saratoga Springs provides students with a delightful place to visit, with its local shops, galleries, coffeehouses, and great restaurants while Boston, New York City, and Montreal are each a mere three-hour drive away. As an NCAA Division III school, Skidmore sponsors nearly 20 intercollegiate athletic teams which have earned numerous national championships in the last decade and more than 30 Liberty League titles.
