Randolph-Macon College is a private, coeducational liberal arts and sciences college located in Ashland, Virginia. Established in 1830 by the Methodist Church, Randolph-Macon College was named for Virginia statesmen John Randolph and North Carolina statesmen, Nathaniel Macon. Though neither man was Methodist, their names were adopted in order to send a message that students of all denominations were welcome at the college. Originally located in Boydton, Virginia, in 1868 the College moved to Ashland in order to escape the ravages of the Civil War. Today, Randolph-Macon College is a thriving institution committed to developing the minds and characters of its students for the ultimate purpose of preparing undergraduates for lives of success.
Academic Programs
Randolph-Macon College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The mission of Randolph-Macon College is to challenge students to “communicate effectively, to think analytically and critically, to experience and appreciate the creative process, to develop qualities of leadership, and to synthesize what they know with who they are.” More than 50 areas of study are offered at the College, including more than 30 majors and 35 minors.Randolph-Macon College features small classes which are all taught by professors and never teaching assistants. The College offers a unique four-year career preparation program called “The Edge” which assists students in developing a personalized career plan that provides them with a competitive advantage for their careers and when applying to graduate school. Through “The Edge”, students are able to “network with alumni and business partners; gain internship and other experience that contributes to success; -participate in self-assessments; and build career skills.” So sure is Randolph-Macon College of this program and its ability to deliver, that a Four-Year Degree Guarantee is offered – so long as students meet the Four-Year Degree Guarantee requirements, all tuition costs are waived for courses needed to complete a degree after a student’s first four years.
Student Life
Randolph-Macon College has a total enrollment figure of nearly 1,400 students, all of whom are undergraduates. The male to female ratio is split approximately 45% to 55%, respectively. Nearly all first-time, first-year students as well as approximately 85% of all undergraduates choose to live in one of the college-owned, -operated, or –affiliated housing. Randolph-Macon College recognizes than 80 student clubs and organizations which keep students busy. As an NCAA Division III school, the College’s 17 intercollegiate sports teams compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.Located in the scenic town of Ashland on a beautiful 116 acre campus, Randolph-Macon College’s students enjoy an abundance of nearby shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities as well as access to the regional park system which features forests, streams and challenging trails for hiking and mountain biking. Fresh, locally-grown food can be found at the Ashland Farmers Market and a good time is to be had at one of the town’s many street parties and arts fairs. Randolph-Macon College is located just 15 minutes north of Richmond and is two hours away from Washington, DC, historic areas such as Jamestown, Monticello, and Williamsburg, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach.
