Quinnipiac University is a private, 4-year school located in Hamden, CT just 11 miles north of New Haven. The school was founded in 1929 by prominent business people in response to Northeastern University leaving New Haven at the onset of the Great Depression. The school was founded as Connecticut College of Commerce; in 1951 it was renamed Quinnipiac in honor of a local Native American tribe. The campus was relocated in 1966 to Hamden and achieved university status in 2000. The campus is set at the bottom of Sleeping Giant State Park, also called Mt Carmel, named for its resemblance to a human figure lying down on its back. Most building and activity centers on the 250 acre campus are focused around a central quad; there are also many open spaces as well as the State Park adjacent to the campus.

Academic Programs

Quinnipiac University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 60 fields of study. Noted for Medical and Education fields, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Healthcare fields. The University is comprised of 9 colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences; School of Business, School of Communications; School of Education; School of Engineering; School of Health Sciences; School of Law; School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Per the Mission Statement, “The University prepares undergraduate and graduate students for achievement and leadership in business, communications, engineering, health, education, law, medicine, nursing and the liberal arts and sciences. Quinnipiac University educates students to be valued and contributing members of their communities through a vital, challenging and purposeful educational program. Students engage real-world issues through practice and the consideration of different perspectives. The University’s innovative QU seminar series further prepares undergraduates to understand their role and responsibilities as members of the Quinnipiac community, as well as the larger national and global communities.”

Student Life

There are nearly 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Quinnipiac University, many of whom live on campus among the dozen available options, ranging from traditional dormitories to theme housing and apartments. The University sponsors many clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue and gold Bobcats, led by Boomer the Bobcat, field teams in 12 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. To achieve its Mission, Quinnipiac University: “offers degree programs centered on effective practice that are strengthened by the integration of a liberal education; cultivates critical thinking, intellectual integrity, curiosity and creativity in the pursuit of knowledge; provides a variety of learning and service experiences to facilitate student achievement; maintains a strong commitment to a diverse and inclusive student body, faculty and staff; fosters an understanding of and respect for the multiplicity of human perspectives and belief systems; {and} supports faculty teacher-scholars who are effective teachers and who engage in scholarship.” It can be summed up in this statement – An education at Quinnipiac embodies the University’s commitment to three core values: high-quality academic programs, a student-oriented environment and a strong sense of community.
