Ouachita Baptist University is a private, coeducational, liberal arts institution located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Established in 1886, the school began with more than 200 enrolled students after being authorized by a vote of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. Ouachita Baptist University continues to be affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention and has been ranked among the top colleges in the nation by names such as U.S. News & World Report and Forbes. The University’s vision statement declares its intention to “foster a love of God and a love of learning by creating for students and other constituents dynamic growth opportunities both on campus and throughout the world.”

Academic Programs

Ouachita Baptist University is founded on the values of Faith, Scholarship, Growth, Character, and Community. The University’s mission is to embrace “the liberal arts tradition” and prepare “individuals for ongoing intellectual and spiritual growth, lives of meaningful work, and reasoned engagement with the world.” Ouachita Baptist University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1953.

Ouachita Baptist University offers a wide range of programs through its several academic schools. These include the Frank D. Hickingbotham School of Business, which encompasses the Departments of Accounting and Business Administration; the Chesley & Elizabeth Pruet School of Christian Studies which include the Departments of Biblical Studies, Christian Theology, Christian Ministry, Christian Missions, Philosophy; the Michael D. Huckabee School of Education; the School of Fine Arts which consists of the Divisions of Music and Applied Arts; the School of Humanities which encompasses the Department of Language and Literature and the Rogers Department of Communications; the J.D. Patternson School of Natural Sciences with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer Sciences, and Physics; and the W.H. Sutton School of Social Sciences with the Departments of History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

Student Life

Ouachita Baptist University has a total enrollment figure of more than 1,500, all of whom are undergraduate students. Representatives from at least 30 states and more than 25 foreign nations make up the University’s student body with a minority enrollment of about 15%. The vast majority of students (over 95%) choose to live on campus in one of Ouachita Baptist University’s several residence halls, in the student village, or in University Apartments.

Ouachita Baptist University’s campus offers an active and vibrant atmosphere for students with student leadership opportunities, the student senate, social clubs and honors, service and professional organizations. All these and more activities and events offer students the opportunity to interact with one another outside of the classroom setting and allow them to develop valuable leadership qualities and skills. An active member of its community, since 1997, students and faculty of Ouachita Baptist University have volunteered more than 77,000 hours as part of Tiger Serve Day – the University’s semi-annual service event. An NCAA Division II school, at least a quarter of all students compete in Ouachita Baptist University’s intercollegiate athletic teams.
