Oklahoma City University is a private, coeducational, urban institution located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the school offers a variety of degree programs in the liberal arts, fine arts, sciences and business. Chartered in 1904 as Epworth University, the school began with just 116 students who met in a building which now forms part of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. The school experienced a number of name changes during its first several years, before settling on its current name in 1924. Oklahoma City University has been named one of the Best Christian Colleges as well as one of the “100 Best College Buys” by Forbes is the only Oklahoma institution to be listed by the US News & World Report in the top tier of regional, master’s-level universities.

Academic Programs

Oklahoma City University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1951. The University welcomes students of all faiths into its “culturally rich community” and is dedicated to success in its students. Oklahoma City University’s mission is to help “men and women pursue academic excellence through a rigorous curriculum focused on students’ intellectual, moral, and spiritual development to prepare them to become effective leaders in service to their communities.” As a private, church-related institution, Oklahoma City University’s vision is to offer an academic excellence which cultivates character, provides for students’ success and welfare, and encourages students in service, leadership, and spiritual growth.

Oklahoma City University is made up of several colleges and schools, including the Kramer School of Nursing, Margaret E. Petree College of Performing Arts, Meinders School of Business, Petree College of Arts & Sciences, Wimberly School of Religion, School of Law and the Saint Paul School of Theology. More than 70 undergraduate majors are offered at Oklahoma City University in addition to nearly two dozen graduate-level degrees, including a law degree, MBA, and two doctoral programs. All classes are taught by professors and never graduate assistants.

Student Life

More than 3,000 students are enrolled at Oklahoma City University, including nearly 2,000 undergraduates, with representatives from nearly all fifty states and more than 40 foreign countries. Situated on a beautiful 104 acre park-like campus in the heart of Oklahoma City, the University is mere minutes away from the wide range of educational, social, cultural and recreational opportunities the city has to offer. Long referred to as OKC, Oklahoma City has earned the nickname of The Big Friendly City, due to its residents’ kind and pleasant demeanor. The City has also been ranked as the best spot in the United States for the launching of a small business, making it an ideal location for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Oklahoma City University boasts more than 80 student-led clubs and organizations, including several national fraternities and sororities, a Habitat for Humanity branch, multicultural student associations, student government, and more. Oklahoma City University’s athletic teams are a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference, competing in the NAIA Division I, and boast well over 50 national championships.
