Oglethorpe University is a private, coeducational institution of the liberal arts and sciences located in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally chartered by the state of Georgia in 1835, Oglethorpe first opened its doors in 1838, beginning with just four faculty members and about two dozen students. The college was forced to shut down in 1862 due to the Civil War. An attempt was made to reopen the school in the years following the war, but the college was unable to be sustained and down a second time shortly after. In 1913 the college was re-chartered and the cornerstone of the new campus laid in 1915. The University is named in honor of James Oglethorpe, a British general, Member of Parliament, and philanthropist who founded the colony of Georgia. A top ranking school, Oglethorpe University has been named among the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Academic Programs

Oglethorpe University’s mission is to provide “a superior education in which liberal arts and sciences and professional programs complement each other in a small-college environment within a dynamic urban setting.” The University’s mission statement continues, “Oglethorpe’s programs emphasize intellectual curiosity, close collaboration among faculty and students, and engaged learning in relevant field experiences.” The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1950.

Oglethorpe University offers more than 60 programs of study at the undergraduate level with an option to create an Individually Planned Major; Biology, Business, and Psychology have proven to be some of the most popular majors. Oglethorpe is best known for its Core Program which lasts all four years of student’s college stay and is an intentionally designed sequence of courses, with each course building upon the last. Oglethorpe University offers students Study Abroad program opportunities and has more than 300 Internship Partners.

Student Life

Oglethorpe University has a total enrollment figure of more than 1,000, all of whom are undergraduate students. Students come from more than 30 states and nearly 40 foreign countries and many are the first in their families to ever attend college. Female students outnumber males by approximately 20% and more than 30% of students identify as persons of color. At least two thirds of students choose to live on Oglethorpe’s campus in one of the University’s several on-campus housing options.

Oglethorpe University boasts a new 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art campus center and recognizes more than 50 student clubs and organizations as well as nearly a dozen Greek letter fraternities and sororities. Oglethorpe boasts many school traditions, including the Battle of Bloody Marsh, an annual tug-of-war event named after famous 1742 battle in which Gen. Oglethorpe’s forces defeated the Spanish troops in South Georgia; the Boar’s Head holiday celebration; the Liberal Arts & Sciences Symposium; “Night of the Arts”; Oglethorpe Day and many other events and traditions. As an NCAA Division III school, Oglethorpe fields more than a dozen athletic teams and is a member of the Southern Athletic Association.
