North Carolina Central University, located in Durham, NC, is a Historically Black University. This public, 4-year university was founded in 1910 and sits on 135 acres in the southern part of Durham. The architecture is primarily Georgian revival style of traditional collegiate red brick and has the feel of a more suburban campus. NC Central was the nation’s first state-supported liberal arts college for black students. Durham, called the City of Medicine, has a rich history in tobacco; more recently, the city is known for its proximity to Research Triangle Park – a tech and financial center for many companies. Among the notable alumni are former NC Governor Mike Easley and actor Ivan Dixon.

Academic Programs

North Carolina Central University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates and Doctorates. The University is noted for Nursing, Dietetics, Speech, Teacher education and Theatre, the largest programs being Psychology, Business, Criminal Justice and Heath Care-related fields. The University is comprised of ten schools and colleges: College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, University College, School of Business (AACSB), School of Education, School of Law, School of Library & Information Sciences, School of Nursing, College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences. Per the Mission statement, “North Carolina Central University, with a strong tradition of teaching, research, and service, prepares students to become global leaders and practitioners who transform communities. Through a nationally recognized law school, highly acclaimed and innovative programs in visual and performing arts, sciences, business, humanities, and education programs, NCCU students are engaged problem solvers. Located in the Research Triangle, the University advances research in the biotechnological, biomedical, informational, computational, behavioral, social, and health sciences. Our students enhance the quality of life of citizens and the economic development of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.”

Student Life

There are nearly 6000 undergraduate students enrolled in North Carolina Central University, many of whom live on campus in residences ranging from traditional “corridor housing” to suites and apartments. NC Central sponsors over 130 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and gray Eagles field teams in 9 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition. Their biggest rival is North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, although there has been a recent rivalry building with Duke University (also located in Durham). NC Central has a strong sense of community and identity; among their traditions are Homecoming and Founders Day which celebrate alumni and the school’s rich history. The University maintains a clear vision, “to develop and establish a University College known regionally and nationally for promoting student productivity and success” and good perspective: “Students are the source of North Carolina Central University’s success. They should always receive the strongest commitment of the staff, faculty, and administration.”
