Morehead State University is a public, 4-year university located in Morehead, KY in the northeastern section of the state. Founded as Morehead Normal School in 1887; the school’s name was changed to Morehead State Teachers College in 1930 and achieved university status in 1966 after dropping “Teachers” from its name. Adjacent to the Daniel Boone National Forest. The sprawling 700 acre campus includes the 320-acre Derrickson Agricultural Complex and 166-acres of the Browning Orchard. A portion of the campus is on the National Register of Historic Places. The main campus buildings, arrayed around a large L-shaped quad, are largely traditional collegiate red brick architecture. Among the list of notable alumni are former NFL quarterback Phil Simms and TV game show host Chuck Woolery.

Academic Programs

Morehead State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 210 fields of study. There are several Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs available online and the university sponsors summer, semester and internships abroad. The university is comprised of four colleges: Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Business & Technology; College of Education and the College of Science. Noted for Healthcare, Teacher Education, Music and Theatre programs, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Healthcare-related fields. Per the Mission statement, Morehead State University views themselves as “a community of lifelong learners, we will: Educate Students for success in a global environment; Engage in scholarship; Promote diversity of people and ideas; Foster innovation, collaboration and creative thinking; and Serve our communities to improve the quality of life.”

Student Life

There are nearly 10,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Morehead State University, most of whom live on campus among the over 13 residence halls. Housing options range from traditional dormitories to suites and apartments as well as Greek houses. There are many clubs and student organizations on campus including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue and gold Eagles, led by Beaker, field teams in 9 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition.
