Located on a sprawling 5,200-acre campus, Michigan State University (MSU) is a public research institution and the nation’s pioneer land-grant university. Established in 1855 as a prototype for the 69 land-grant institutions established under the Morrill Act of 1862, MSU is the first institution of higher learning in the nation to teach scientific agriculture. MSU’s large campus features over 500 buildings and the university boasts nearly 20,000 acres located throughout the state of Michigan used for agricultural and natural resource research and education. One of the top research universities in the world, MSU’s campus is known to be not only one of the largest but also one of the greenest in the country.

Academic Programs

Michigan State University has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1922 and offers a huge variety of programs in undergraduate, graduate, and professional fields of study. More than 200 programs are currently offered through MSU’s several colleges and schools, which include the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Residential College of Arts and Humanities; College of Arts and Letters; Eli Broad College of Business/ Eli Broad Graduate School of Management; College of Communication Arts and Sciences; College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Human Medicine; James Madison College; Lyman Briggs College; College of Music; College of Natural Science; College of Nursing; College of Osteopathic Medicine; College of Social Science; and the College of Veterinary Medicine.

MSU offers students a wide array of study away programs, including numerous of summer programs, semester study abroad programs, faculty-led programs, internships, freshmen seminars and more in over 60 countries across all continents. MSU also encourages scholarship and creative activity on every learning level and provides students with a number of opportunities to participate in projects, connect with faculty members, or conduct their own research projects.

Student Life

Michigan State University boasts a total enrollment figure of over 50,000, including nearly 40,000 undergraduate students; all fifty States are represented in the student body as well as nearly 140 foreign nations. MSU offers a range of different on campus housing options, including multiple undergraduate halls, a graduate hall, and several apartment villages. MSU’s campus boasts a vibrant Greek life with more than 50 nationally affiliated Greek-letter organizations; in addition, students may choose to become involved in any of the 600+ student groups that are registered at MSU each year.

An NCAA Division I-A school, MSU is a member of the Big Ten conference and boasts more than two dozen varsity teams, nicknamed the Spartans. In addition, MSU also boasts one of the largest intramural sports programs in the nation. The University campus features a variety of athletic, cultural and entertainment facilities including the Broad Art Museum; Wharton Center for Performing Arts; Spartan Stadium; Breslin Student Events Center; Abrams Planetarium; and the Horticultural Gardens.
