Located in Lake Charles, Louisiana McNeese State University is a public institution within the University of Louisiana System, one of the largest public higher education systems in the nation. Established in September of 1939, the school began as the Lake Charles Junior College. Later renamed the John McNeese Junior College, the school adopted its new name in honor of John McNeese, a renowned Southwest Louisiana educator and first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 the college became a four-year institution, coming under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education and in 1970 the college formally became McNeese State University.

Academic Programs

McNeese State University is primarily a teaching institution which describes itself as an “evolving comprehensive university with a primary mission to provide a wide range of baccalaureate and carefully selected graduate curricula, distinguished by academic excellence.” McNeese State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1954.

McNeese State University offers more than 70 degree programs, including a wide variety of programs which are offered fully online, ranging from Associates to Master’s degrees as well as several certificates and specialist programs. The University is divided into several colleges, schools and departments, including the Department of General and Basic Studies, the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science & Agriculture, the Burton College of Education, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Nursing & Health Professions, and the William J. Dore, Sr., School of Graduate Studies.

Student Life

McNeese State University has a total enrollment figure of more than 8,000, including nearly 7,500 undergraduate students. On campus student housing is available in McNeese State University’s residential community and includes all-inclusive housing amenities (such as rent, internet access, cable, telephone service, electricity, water, and waste management services).

McNeese State University is home to a number of Greek fraternities and sororities and recognizes more than 100 student-run clubs and organizations which cater to a wide range of professional and personal interests. These and other campus events and activities provide students with opportunities to interact with one another and with faculty members outside of the classroom and develop valuable leadership qualities and skills. As an NCAA Division I school, McNeese State University’s varsity athletic teams compete in the Southland Conference. The University’s sports include men’s football, basketball, indoor track, cross country, outdoor track, baseball, and golf as well as women’s cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, tennis, golf, volleyball, basketball, softball, and soccer.
